Iraq Has Notified The U.N That The Terror Group ISIS Now Has The Materials To Construct A 'Dirty Bomb'

Exclusive: Iraq Tells U.N. That 'Terrorist Groups' Seized Nuclear Materials -- Reuters

(Reuters) - Insurgents in Iraq have seized nuclear materials used for scientific research at a university in the country's north, Iraq told the United Nations in a letter appealing for help to "stave off the threat of their use by terrorists in Iraq or abroad."

Nearly 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of uranium compounds were kept at Mosul University, Iraq's U.N. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim told U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the July 8 letter obtained by Reuters on Wednesday.

"Terrorist groups have seized control of nuclear material at the sites that came out of the control of the state," Alhakim wrote, adding that such materials "can be used in manufacturing weapons of mass destruction."

In case of fire authorities tell you to know where the exits are ahead of time.

In case if an active shooter, police tell you to know where the exits are or where to safe harbor.

In these cases we are talking about a very small area, a building.

I tell my son to know where he stands and when. Meaning what region (be it city state/province or some other size) he is going to be in. The LA riots come to mind as does terrorism. It is really sad that you have to be careful walking into city and have to worry about more than pedestrian crime.

If there is a fire in a movie theater is on fire, the president can't be responsible for the incident.

But the President does run the CIA and the DoD. I hold him responsible for the general level of terrorism. Maybe the U.S. does not have enough resources. But I expect him to work with other nations that can be trusted.

Instead the first thing the current President did was to Piss of the British.

I'm not worried about uranium or even plutonium (except for heavy metal poisoning). If they had obtained Cesium-137, Cobalt-60, or Strontium-90, I would be very worried. They are gamma emitters.

I will say, however, that we need to do more. At least to identify and secure sensitive sites that are vulnerable to ISIS occupation and remove the hazardous substances.

Things fall apart, the center cannot hold...

Don't forget that the Maliki and the Iraqi gov. have every interest in spooking the international community into coming to their aid.

I'm not saying that the ISIS threat is being exaggerated, however, I am saying that Western states in general need to remain patient. Decisions made out of fear more than rationality can be suicidal.
