CTV: Canada to send troops to Ukraine in non-combat role

Canada will be sending troops to Ukraine to participate in a non-combat role in the region in the coming months.

CTV's Mercedes Stephenson reported the news Friday on Power Play.

"While the government is still working out the details, sources tell CTV News a training mission is one of the options on the table. Canada will likely work closely with American allies who are already in the region," Stephenson said.

WNU Editor: As a Canadian citizen .... this deployment makes me feel very uncomfortable. We are getting involved in a conflict that shows no signs of letting up, and we will be viewed by many in eastern Ukraine as a foreign occupation force assisting a government that has very little support among Russian Ukrainians. If there is one thing that I always tell people about Russians .... they may hate their governments and leaders, but they will doubly hate outsiders who show up uninvited .... especially if they are carrying weapons.

This is a stupid move with possible long term consequences.

As A Canadian living in Ottawa this deployment comes as no surprise. The government is shoring up Ukrainian votes ahead of the federal election. Best way to get votes from Canada's largest Ukrainian community; help Kiev or give off the impression that the Canadian government is doing all that it can. Is a few potential votes worth potentially escalating a conflict in crises.. I think not. But my fellow conservatives think otherwise.

Harper is a US sock puppet and will do as he's told ..

Harper is well aware that the Canadian economy is imploding. These diversions have been used for many years now as long as your populous is in a slumber. He must be careful since he is speaking on behalf on 35 million passive citizens and if they ever awake this will bite him back badly.

Why?

What I view as one of Canada's diplomatic strengths - neutrality - is being washed away by the minute.

Iraq. Syria. Eastern Europe. Now, Ukraine.

I just don't see the benefit in this move. Are we doing this to develop stronger ties with the US? How so? From my perspective, our ties are as strong as they've ever been.

Tensions with Russia will increase.

One thing that bothers me, is that Canada's military does not match that of the US. It seems Harper's military deployments are more of political move rather than an actual contribution to the mission. Take in Iraq - 6 CF-18s to hundreds of American ones. Our military contribution is negligible...
