U.S. Marines Forced To Deploy Via Foreign Ships Due To U.S. Vessel Shortage

USA Today: Marines looking at deploying aboard foreign ships

Faced with a shortage of U.S. Navy ships, the Marine Corps is exploring a plan to deploy its forces aboard foreign vessels to ensure they can respond quickly to global crises around Europe and western Africa.

The initiative is a stopgap way to deploy Marines aboard ships overseas until more American vessels are available, said Brig. Gen. Norman Cooling, deputy commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa.

The Marines will be able to respond quickly to evacuate embassies or protect U.S. property and citizens, a need highlighted by the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador.

"There's no substitute for U.S. amphibious" vessels, Cooling said. "We're looking at other options" in the meantime, he added.

So much for the previous pro-US (vs China) article that was posted on this blog not long ago...

And I don't mean to take a dig at you WNU, but you did state the following, "I agree with David Axe. Since the Second World War the U.S. has not only built up a huge military but it has also built up a military network of alliances, bases, understandings, and agreements that have a global reach," which apparently includes hitchhiking on foreign ships! :P

phill,

Back in the day, pre-WWI and up to WWII, not only did Navy's aid in the construction and fitting out of "auxiliary" Civillian Ships as Transports, Hospital Ships and Armed Cruizers,

But Nations had huge Commercial Fleets, called the Merchant Marine, that in times of peace worked as a Government Corporation, and in times of war, acted as a strategic transport service, a naval reserve and provided patrol and combat service.

Post WWII, despite vital and valuable service in two World Wars and many more minor conflicts, these vast pools of ships and labour, were sold off for pennies on the dollar because the practice was contrary to the ideaology of Capitalism.
