Why Would Russia Invade The Baltics?

Doug Bandow, National Interest: Why on Earth Would Russia Attack the Baltics?

When the Cold War closed many people believed that history had ended. Peace had descended upon the earth. The lion was about to lie down with the lamb. The Second Coming seemed on its way. Europe was certain to be free and undivided.

Alas, it hasn’t worked out that way. But no worries. At least NATO officials are happy. Following Russian intervention in Georgia and Ukraine the alliance rediscovered a sense of purpose through its old enemy, Moscow. The Obama administration just announced a multi-billion dollar program to bolster U.S. forces in Eastern Europe. Now a Rand Corporation report warning that Russia could easily overrun the three Baltic members of NATO is raising additional alarm.

Previous Post: If Russia Invaded The Baltics, NATO Forces Would be Overrun In 3 Days

WNU Editor: Doug Bandow's analysis is on the money. There is no need for Russia to invade the Baltics .... the costs would be too high. But I would add a caveat .... Russia would invade the Baltics if it felt that the Russian minority in these countries were facing danger. Russians make up a significant portion of Estonia and Latvia .... and they are faced with language and cultural laws that any other society would call bigoted and racist. But having said that .... it will still not be enough for Moscow to order an invasion.

Russia did not invade Ukraine, and it did not intervene until a US-supported fascist-oriented coup government took over the Ukraine government and threatened ethnic Russians in ten percent of Ukraine. So there's no reason to believe that Russia would invade the Baltics. Just because the US invades other countries, it doesn't mean that US enemies would do the same.

Don Bacon are you serious when you say "Russia did not invade Ukraine"??

Haha

Ok then, I guess the U.S. didn't invade Iraq; until the Baathist government uh, threatened Kurds, or *insert tragic evil against somebody*, forcing them to "intervene".

Nice try spin doctor. Whether or not you think it was justified doesn't change the fact that it was an invasion, and a successfully deceptive one at that.

Alex,

Guess you never heard of what happened in Georgia in 2008,

Or have been paying any attention to what a tiny deployment is Syria has managed in 4 months.

For Mr. Bacon, there is only one evil force in the world - the United States of America. Everyone else is poor and downtrodden, oppressed by the Great Satan and righteous in all their actions. If Mr. Bacon is indeed an American citizen he is so full of self-loathing that he will willingly justify anything that happens in the world that condemns, harms, or shames his own country. Sad.

I'm with the Editor in this. It would take a lot for Russia to invade the Baltic states. Not of few of the people living there are stark raving lunatics on the same order as the hysterical Ukrops. Who would want that PITA?

The Ukro neo Nazis and their Euro-American backers brought on the Crimea(river) intervention, referendum and subsequent annexation. Just as the crazy Georgians and same friends almost cost themselves Pristine.

Crazy retards and their handlers are their own worst enemies.

My advice?

Stop f'n around.
