My question is: If the military is successful in taking over the country will they work to end the conflict against the Kurds in the southern part of their country that the Turkish president arguably restarted?

Any thoughts, anyone?

Ohhhh snap!!!

The army has never been a big fan of Mr. Erdogan. We should expect to see the situation with Syria to see a big change.

Yeah, I know that I mentioned stuff in the past about Turkey intervening in Syria on the ground... I don't believe that Turkey will do that now. I know that at least President Erdoğan realized that it wasn't feasible and moved a day ago or so to 'normalize' relations with Syria.

The Kurds are not on the minds of the military or Erdogan right now. The focus is on who will be in control at the end of the day. In the past .... the Kurds and the military never got alone .... I expect that to continue.

I have talked with my comrade Angela that help Kurds and know better the situation in Turkey, and he told me that the military hate the islamist form of Turkey made by Erdogan, but he think they cannot win this coup.
For someone the war against the Kurds is to give satisfaction and power to military before restricted.

If this coup fail it may end with hundred of capital punishment or with a split in the country. If successful it may end like Egipt.

Is 50% to end the conflict with Kurds and 50% to intensify.
For now

Hasn't Erdogan and the Govt been trying to cut deals with Russia and Syria in the last couple of weeks, could this have something to do with the Coup attempt?

Probably not.

Ergodan use the have a "good neighbor" policy, trying for trade, tourism and good relationships with Iraq, Iran, Syria, Russia, Europe, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt,

But with the Syrian Civil War, Ergodan backed the Jihadi's, al Nusra and ISIS, picked a war with the Kurds, in the hopes of splitting Syria, carving off Ildib Province and adding it to Turkey, in the process, pissed off most of the neighbors, killed trade and tourism.

I know, from some Turkish friends that they all hated Erdoğan. But they were part of the city elites and had several family members in the Turkish Army officer corps. Does Erdoğan have strong support in the central part of Turkey? Someone in Turkey has to like him.

Jay Farquharson said...

The core of Ergodan's support are the conservative, religious rural population, and a "rigged" political system.

RRH said...

sure, but the "Assad must go" routine will be at an end. Straightening out internal matters, like Erdogan's pet terrorists and corrupt family, will be high on the list.

RRH said...

YC

Does your friend know what forces Erdogan can call upon to defend his government?

RRH said...

what of the security forces? Who can he count on?

Jay Farquharson said...

Probably the MIT, some of the Special Forces who were re-trained as ISIS like strike groups, some of the junior Air Force ranks, some of the Civil Police Forces and the paramilitary Self Defence Groups.

RRH said...

By the looks of it, the Army has the jump on all of them and are in control of the major communication arteries.

Does anyone know which forces (divs brigades etc) are deployed? I see a lot of AFVs and tanks.

I know that the 3rd Corps of the Turkish 1st Field Army was based outside of Istanbul. I'd imagine that they are the ones on CNN and other US news stations being overwhelmed by civilians. The Turkish 2nd Field Army is the one to pay attention to. Under Turkey's military reorganization in 2008 (I think that it was in 2008) the 2nd Field Army was designated as Turkey's premier fighting force. They have all of the modern weapon systems and posse the most professional soldiers of the Turkish Army. At least to my understanding...

RRH said...

Thanks Andrew.

I've seen video of Leopard IIs in the street. I'm assuming it may be elements of the 2nd. I'm going to look it up.

YOUNG COMMUNIST SAID nothing. 50% either way when it comes to the Kurds?

RRH said...

I get the impression he supports the Kurds. Just speculating, but I bet he's most likely sympathetic toward the PKK. Either way, I'm sure he's not an Erdogan/MB/"moderate" headchopper fan.

RRH,

This is what I was referring to, when I said YC said nothing.

"Is 50% to end the conflict with Kurds and 50% to intensify.
For now"

I do see a profitable career as a palm reader, tarot card reader or carny in YC's future.
