For The First Time Russian Bombers Use Iranian Air Base For Strikes In Syria

New York Times: Russia, for First Time, Uses Iranian Base for Syria Campaign

MOSCOW — Russian bombers launched attacks in Syria from an Iranian air base for the first time on Tuesday, potentially altering the political and military equation in the Middle East.

Long-range Tupolev-22M3 bombers, which would otherwise have to fly from Russia, used an Iranian base near Hamadan to hit a series of targets inside Syria, according to a brief statement from the Russian Defense Ministry.

The agreement to let Russia use the base significantly deepens the country’s military role in the region, most obviously in Iran. And it could help solidify Russia as the main broker of any future peace agreement in Syria.

In addition to forging closer relations with Iran, the Kremlin has been trying to renew ties with Turkey, with which relations have been tense since Turkey shot down a Russian fighter plane nine months ago. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey traveled to Moscow last week in an effort to repair relations, and although much of the public statements after his meeting with President Vladimir V. Putin focused on trade and other relations, the two also discussed Syria.

While the Iranian airfields will be useful for Russia in the Syrian war, the chief impact of this development will be on the Arab Gulf states.

Iran is showing that Russia is an ally. Any state contemplating military conflict with Iran must consider the possibility that they will have to fight Russian forces also. While Israel and the United States are threatened by this development, the Gulf monarchies are the most threatened.

Obama has squandered every bit of American power & prestige that he could and willfully so.

The Obama nuke deal was supposed to bring rapprochement with the US and Iran, not Iran and Russia. Foreign policy by forfeit and concession earns ZERO respect.

The 5+1 Agreement was supposed to, for Iran, see a return of "all" their money, and a lifting of a Sanctions.

Never happened and two days after the agreement the Fed imposed new financial sanctions on Iran and anyone doing business with them.

Iran is just another of a long list of countries that have learned the hard way, that US Agreement's and Treaties arn't worth the paper they are written on.

When I worked in tech, I quickly learned that Business deals with American's were only as good as your Corporate Lawyers and your bankroll was.
