Wall Street Journal: Brazil’s Supreme Court Gives OK to Open Probe of New President Temer

Judge approves preliminary investigation, which is based on plea-bargain testimony by a key witness that implicates President Michel Temer, other PMDB members

SÃO PAULO—Brazil’s Supreme Court late Friday gave the green light to prosecutors to open a probe into corruption allegations that President Michel Temer is linked to a sprawling graft scandal centered on the nation’s state-run oil company.

Brazil Supreme Court Judge Teori Zavascki approved the preliminary investigation, which is based on plea-bargain testimony by a key witness that allegedly implicates Mr. Temer and several high-ranking members of his Brazilian Democratic Movement Party or PMDB, including Senate President Renan Calheiros, according to a lawyer close to the case.
