Retired British General: Military 'Unable' To Protect UK From Attack

The Guardian: UK armed forces 'could not withstand attack by major power like Russia'

Gen Sir Richard Barrons, recently retired chief of joint forces command, gives scathing assessment of UK military.

The UK’s armed forces would not be able to protect the country from a full-scale attack by Russia or another major military power, the recently retired commander of joint forces command has said.

Gen Sir Richard Barrons, who stepped down in April, delivered a scathing assessment of the UK military in a 10-page private memorandum to the defence secretary, Sir Michael Fallon.

It comes despite the government’s decision to increase defence spending by nearly £5bn by 2020/21 and to meet Nato’s target of 2% of GDP for the rest of the decade.

Canada could not ward off a determined attack by the Wyoming National Guard or the Argentinean Navy. The U.K. is not the only military that is in trouble.

It is not a nice world out there. Reducing military establishments to paper tigers or arming them with weapons too expensive to use or lose is to set up a military to fail.

Seems that those who serve us and protect us have forgotten what those words mean.

I agree with Anonymous: all the Democracy are in trouble because they forgot the Roman Empire word " If you want peace, prepare war". 30 years of neglect is pretty hard to catch up right now.

Anon,

You are quite correct. I could not have put this better myself. The weapin systens are to expensive and to complicated to uze. Russian and Chinese weapons are more reliable and for a vetter price.

If the following statement is made it is equally correct to the one the retired British general made. "The US military is unable to defend America."

Jac,

You are correct. All the "democracies" are in serious trouble. Since 30 years of neglect cannot be made up in short order, a definite change in approach is needed.

I've suggested this here before. 1.) Recognize Russia's position as the world's strongest country with the world's strongest military and act accordingly. 2.)Look for ways to add value to Russia and it's leaders which should lessen tension between us and them. In any organization, it is extremely helpful to be on the "good side" of the powers that be. We might even get promoted!! 3.) Build up our military along with a proper deployment of our forces that would make an attack by Russia against us to costly for them to ponder. Points 1 and 2 in tandem should enhance our security and help us grow our economy.

Chinese and russian weapons may be teluable but their performance record against anything but a 3rd world foe is dismal
