Witness: Philippine President Duterte Ran Death Squad As Mayor

CNN: Philippines President Duterte 'ordered death squad hits while mayor'

(CNN)Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte's office has denied accusations that Duterte ordered a militia group to carry out extrajudicial killings while he was mayor of Davao City.

The claims were made by a witness who was testifying Thursday before a Philippines Senate committee set up to probe alleged extrajudicial killings in the three months since Duterte became president.

The man, who identified himself as Edgar Matobato, testified that he was part of the 300-member "Davao Death Squad" (DDS), which he alleges was run on the orders of Duterte.

Matobato testified the DDS killed alleged drug dealers and criminals in the southern city of Davao, on the order of Duterte when he was mayor, between 1988 and 2013. More than 1,000 were killed in Davao City alone, he claimed.

I will not defend the president but if you know someone who understands Pilipino language please ask him to interpret the senate hearing to you conducted just recently and about this so called witness. More and more mainstream news are giving bad portrayal to the president as he is about to read to list of names for the allegedly illegal drugs personalities which includes(but not limited to) Generals, Police officials, Senator, Mayors, Congressman, Judges, and local councils. More than 50 high-profiled persons have already been named before in connection with these.

Lastly, certain members(Philippine political party) is trying to oust the President. If you could have someone research these mainstream media correspondents and executives they are in one way connected to a political party that is trying to oust the president.

As a resident of where the president came, I am very confident to say that the supposedly witness is not credible as when he was interpellated by senators the witness was not able to match his statements to his answers.

As long as he is killing drug dealers all the power to him, if he does this against political opponents then that would be a problem. Slippery slope.

Stephen,

The slope is indeed slippery in this case.

We shall see.
