Straits Times: 'Talk in China' of removing Kim Jong Un

WASHINGTON • Chinese scholars and policymakers have begun talking about supporting surgical strikes on North Korea and removing leader Kim Jong Un from power, a Chinese academic was quoted in a news report as saying.

"Some Chinese scholars and policy makers began to talk about supporting 'surgical strikes' and 'decapitation' by the US and South Korea as a policy option," said Dr Sun Zhe, co-director of the China Initiative at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, during a security forum in Washington, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency. He added that nationalistic Chinese newspaper Global Times even said China, the North's most important ally, should "make contributions" to "destroying the nuclear capability".

WNU Editor: This is a good post on why China treats North Korea in the manner that it does .... China’s delicate North Korea balancing act (Donald Kirk, Policy Forum). But this open talk in China on getting rid of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un is unprecedented. It tells me that they are getting "fed-up" with the guy .... but will China actually overthrow him .... I doubt that they are willing to go that far.

The Chinese could not be clearer in their warning to Kim.

I have never seen anything like this from China on North Korea. They are warning him, but I don't think Kim Jong Un cares.

Well, if China want to do it this mean to have a replacement ready before doing anything. They can't give the opportunity of a Korea reunification for the South and having American troops on their border.

WNU,
" but I don't think Kim Jong Un cares." I think you're right and he's completely gone. I always had wondered how far Chinese intelligence had penetrated into the North Korean government, but if he's completely balmy (to the point the ones closest to him are the most afraid), then it may not matter. The chinese know that those North Korean rockets can fly west just as well as they can east.

Re-unification of Korea would be in China's interest.

South Korea would mop up like West Germany did. Only it will take longer,2 or 3 times as long.

I think China would agree to it of the U.S. pulled out of South Korea and China would respect Korea's borders. Since the Han Dynasty China has.

China should have a marquee firing of Kim Jung Un.(http://www.spike.com/shows/bar-rescue)

This is important so that the 100 families that rule North Korea fall in line. I do not care if the assassinate him, exile him to a gilded cage on a Pacific Island under house arrest or put him on trial for crimes against humanity. He needs to be gone. If there is no trials, there at least has to be a South African style truth commission.

They can clean house by retiring all generals over 60 on a pension. There need not by any or much bloodshed.

The same day as Kim Jung Un gets the pink slip the concentration camps need to opened, filmed, documented and the people rescued

I am not really interested in putting a lot of people in trial. I would not know how many to put on trial at this point. That would take some debate. After 7 decades of this type of rule, how would you expect someone like Kim Jung Un to act? The determinist in me would say he could not have acted in any other way. The person, who believes in free will in me, says hang him high. After 7 decades of such rule I do not think Canadians or Americans would act much different. Yale researcher Stanley Milgram showed as much.

The U.S. leaves south Korea and South Korea picks up the reconstruction bill. It would/will be both a blessing, an opportunity and a headache for South Korea.
