Did Yemen's Houthi Rebels Launch A Missile At Mecca?

Al Jazeera: Yemen’s Houthis accused of firing missile at Mecca

Saudi Arabia says it intercepted ballistic missile heading towards Islam's holy city, sparking denial from Yemen rebels.

Yemen's Houthi rebels have been accused of targeting Saudi Arabia's holy city of Mecca by launching a long-range ballistic missile from 500km over the border.

The rebels and their ally Iran vehemently denied the allegation on Friday.

The Saudi-led military coalition - which is backing Yemen's pro-government forces in the conflict with the Shia fighters - said the missile was "intercepted and destroyed" before it could do any damage - about 65km from Mecca, home to some of Islam's most sacred sites.

Yemen Missile Forces have the Scarab SS-21, ( max range, 120 km), the Frog -7 ( max range, 70 km), the Scud B, (max range 300 km) and a NORK copy of the Scud C, ( max range, 600km).

It's 819 km from the Yemeni border to Mecca.

Are the Saudi's admitting that the Yemeni's have captured, secured and can operate Scud launchers 200 km inside Saudi Arabia?

Good point Jay.

The bigger question is: The USA now has Patriot missile batteries protecting Mecca?

Saudi's bought Patriots after the Gulf War, but US owned and based Vinnel Systems mans, maintains and operates the Systems.

They may well have missiles that we are not privy to, who knows what irans supplied, and yes it would now seem that they have been getting more than moral support.

Scud C's are more than 40 feet long. They require a 60ft long, 10 foot wide, 80 ton TEL vehicle to launch.

North Korea is the only manufacturer of Scud C variants and sold 92 of them to the Yemen Army. Still, Scud C's don't have the range.

Iran manufactures a Scud E variant, that's 11 feet longer, requires a silo or fixed platform launcher.

Neither Scud variant has a warhead of any significant impact, unless you hit ( as the Yemen Army Missile Forces have in the past) densely packed military formations or a command and control center.

In both cases, you arn't smuggling those on dhows past the Multinatonal Naval Blockaide of Yemen, or freighters either. Yemeni's are starving to death because the anti-Yemen Coelition isn't even letting food, fuel and medicine in.

Occam's razor say's it's a completely made up Saudi story designed to try to deflect criticism of Saudi war crimes in Yemen, and an attempt to use "religion" to fire up their base.
