The Australian/The Times: Iraqi general will leave corridor open for Islamic State fighters to escape Mosul

The Iraqi general commanding the operation to liberate Mosul plans to leave open a corridor for Islamic State fighters to flee the city rather than trap them in an urban battle that would endanger civilians.

Major-General Najim Abed al-Jubouri believes that the city’s hundreds of thousands of residents would be likely to be used as a mass human shield.

“I believe in a corridor,” he told The Times. “If we surround them [Islamic State] from every side they will be pushed to fight to the last. The population is the big challenge for us — so we must fight Isis outside Mosul, not inside.”

It's not rocket science.

ISIS's caliphinate has to be preserved to attack Assad, it just can't be preserved on Iraqi territory.

I don't understand how anyone can be surprised at this point. If what happened in Jarablus and then Deir Ezzur wasn't a dead give away - never mind the half assed effort for the past years - I don't know what it will take to convince folks that ISIS is a tool of "the west".

"Welcome to the cauldron",

Georgy Zuchov.

No "cauldron's" being prepared.

As with the ISIS seige of Kobane, the ISIS Oil trade, etc, the Wtdst is making sure their pet jihadi's survive.

Not a fan of sovjet tactics, only brute force and little finess! But Zuchov was a great General, to bad "mad as a cow" Stalin sent him away...

This is how Arabs fight. The groups we hired at Tora Bora did it, they did it in every operation we did in Iraq even with US forces as the main force the Iraqi politicks would get involved work our a deal for a portion etc...

It is very near sighted thinking from the locals mixed with the pansy beliefs that killing enemy makes more enemy, Islamic radical can be negotiated with, limiting damage to city etc... stuff from the west.
