Putin Lists His Demands For The Next U.S. President

Russian President Putin. TASS

Leonid Bershidsky, Bloomberg: Putin's Ultimatum to the Next U.S. President

The next U.S. administration will inherit the worst relationship with Russia since Ronald Reagan called the Soviet Union an evil empire. Judging from the list of grievances that President Vladimir Putin has laid out, even a relatively Putin-friendly Donald Trump will have a hard time satisfying him.

Putin delivered his message to the future U.S. president Monday, just as the U.S. State Department announced it was suspending negotiations with Russia on a ceasefire in Syria and Russia-backed Syrian troops moved to take more ground in Aleppo. In a bill submitted to parliament, Putin threatened to end a joint U.S.-Russian disarmament program -- in which surplus weapons-grade plutonium is processed into fuel -- unless the U.S. meets certain conditions:

WNU editor: In the current environment none of these demands will be met .... and will not be met by the next U.S. President. This list is directed more at the Russian public .... and to maintain Russian President Putin's image of being "tough". To put it bluntly .... if Moscow wants to have better relations with the West, this list of demands is a non-starter. Then again .... Putin may have taken a page from Donald Trump's book "The Art Of The Deal". Ask for the moon, and be happy if you get at least something.

At a minimum, the US needs to understand Russia is the most powerful country on earth and the United States has no hope of changing this in the foreseeable future. When this is understood, policies can be set accordingly.

You seem to love saying this about Russia in a lot of your comments. Any reason for this?

Did the WNU editor just admit to owning/reading a Donald Trump book?

Would explain a lot... :P

As a start of negotiations, the United States would need to 1.)lift US sanctions against Russia and Russian individuals, 2.)recognize Crimea as Russian, and 3.)while the US has no control over what Western Europe does, the United States should agree to oppose any and all efforts to sanction Russia with all its might. This would need to be agreed to before negotiations on other issues can even be begun.

The article mentions something about "humiliating and nonsensical" compensation to Russians impacted negatively by sanctions. While Russia probably does not want to go there as their allies have taken plenty of pounds of flesh from Americans over the decades, it would be helpful if the Russians understood the very human desire of the American side not to be humiliated.

The American leadership probably did not understand the nature of Ukraine or its government before foolishly jumping into this conflict. As the more powerful country, Russia could strike a conciliatory tone toward the United States allowing the United States to avoid humiliation.

Russia is not the most powerful country on earth .... nor is it's military. But it is definitely the #1 military power in Europe, and if the economy is done right .... maybe Europe's economic powerhouse in 50 years (because of its enormous resource base). But this is a big "maybe".
