VOA: White House Options Grim as Syria Spirals Downward

WHITE HOUSE — Exactly one year after Russia began its air campaign to help Bashar al-Assad’s government crush opposition rebels, Syria continues a hellish descent into chaos, carnage and devastation.

The White House still has no effective plan to stop it and there are no good options either, experts said.

Moscow marked the anniversary on Friday by signaling it will ramp up its bombardments alongside the Syrian government against Aleppo, the last stronghold of opposition rebels.

More than 250,000 people are trapped in the ravaged city, where the bombings have decimated critical sites, including water supplies, refugee camps, hospitals and humanitarian aid supplies. The strikes even targeted an underground playground, according to the White House.

After speaking by phone on Friday, U.S. President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the attacks "barbarous."

WNU Editor: The diplomatic route is now finished. U.S. allies in the region will continue to arm the rebels. The Syrian war is going to intensify, with everyone .... Russia, Turkey, Iran, Hezbollah, etc., escalating their involvement. And for the White House .... they are now positioning themselves to hand the file to the next President.

do you think russia will leave syria if usgov upps the ante big time or are russia in it for long haul no matter what usgov throws into war

Russian can do a lot before January 15. May be it could be finished.
