Reuters: China asks North Korea to stop missile tests, tells U.S. and South to seek talks
China, fearing a rapid escalation of tension on the Korean peninsula, called on North Korea on Wednesday to stop its nuclear and missile tests and for South Korea and the United States to stop joint military drills and seek talks instead.
North Korea launched four ballistic missiles on Monday in response to the joint U.S.-South Korea military exercises, which it regards as preparation for war.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the tests by the North and the joint drills across the border in South Korea were causing tension to increase like two "accelerating trains coming toward each other".

While I'm not sure what utility military drills have, it would seem if we do not practice should actual war happen we would be completely defenseless. As such, much like an athlete, student, or worker needs to be constantly training at their sport, their education, or their career in order to be competitive and to add value a soldier, airman, sailor, or marine will need to practice at what they do otherwise they will be completely defenseless in the event of the real thing and of no use.
This is really a power struggle between South Korea and North Korea. We shouldn't be involved at all but alas we are. For China to expect the United and South Korea to halt practice would essentially leave them defenseless if/when North Korea attacks. Unfortunately if the United States and South Korea were to halt its practices North Korea would continue doing what it is doing and would probably step up the pace as it would then perceive weakness in South Korea and the United States.
Before we can listen to lectures from the Chinese and act on them a certain degree of trust will likely need to be established. China needs to do something real and meaningful to reign in its ally and we are not talking some meaningless for show only halting of coal shipments or whatever that have absolutely no effect whatsoever.
