China Warns Of An Arms Race Over The Deployment Of A U.S. Antimissile System

Washington Post: China warns of ‘consequences’ over deployment of U.S. antimissile system

BEIJING — China warned Tuesday of “consequences” for South Korea over the deployment of a U.S. antimissile system, raising regional tension and questions about China’s commitment to free, open trade.

The U.S. military began deploying the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to South Korea on Monday, the same day North Korea launched four missiles that landed off the Japanese coast.

The United States and South Korea say the system is a necessary defense against Kim Jong Un’s regime, but Beijing rejects the plan.

A puny US missile defense system is no threat to China. It's questionable as to whether or not the puny THAAD system could even stop one North Korean missile.

I think China and North Korea re playing a game with us. When will we ever learn. Actually, I think South Korea should develop it's own missile defense system as well as arm themselves with nuclear weapons. Everyone knows the US is not going to risk the survival of America to defend dear old South Korea. On the other hand, South Korea will not lift a finger to assist America when it is invaded.

Since the participants all know this, essentially North Korea and China can do whatever they want at any time they want to with impunity. A nuclear armed South Korea willing and able to defend itself and perhaps even capable of going on offense will change the calculus of countries like North Korea and China. As an added benefit, it will take some of the pressure off of the overburdened US military.

India, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Phillipines also need THAAD.
