Is America Ready To Fight A Second Korean War?

David French, NRO: Is America Really Ready for a Second Korean War?

The costs of a 21st-century conflict on the Korean peninsula would be devastatingly high.

The first and only time I’ve been jolted awake by air-raid sirens came in Seoul, South Korea, in 2010. I had of course heard tornado-warning sirens before; I grew up in the South, after all. But I’d never heard anything like this. I was sleeping in a tent in the middle of the Yongsan Garrison, taking a break from my night shift during a military exercise called Operation Key Resolve, which was designed to simulate the resumption of hostilities on the Korean peninsula. For the last several nights, I’d been thinking about nothing but the next Korean War as I watched the simulated advance of North Korean infantry divisions toward Seoul.

So when the air-raid sirens went off in mid-afternoon, for a half-second before I got my bearings and realized it was a routine drill, I thought the nightmare scenario I had seen on the computer screen had become real, and I had seconds to find cover before North Korean artillery flattened part of Seoul.

WNU Editor: America has no stomach for another war "of choice". But if North Korea initiates hostilities on its own .... all bets are off.

@wnu: Not second world war, but second Korean war. If world war we're going for the third already :)

However you look at it this is not a war of choice but a war of necessity if these diplomatic overtures fail.
Yes America is ready, they were designed to fight 2.5 major wars at once. Even after being run down by Obama they are still geared for 1.5 .
When a country is spendin g every dime and celebrates destroying u.s cities with a nuclear strike playtime must come to an end for this regime.

"US Army Chief of Staff General Mark Milley admitted he had "grave concerns" about the readiness of his forces to fight a "great power war" with China, Russia, Iran or North Korea ."

Or, not And.

fazman said...

Fair enough, but out of those 3 n.k militarily is the shark in an aquarium, no where to go, no military allies, limited ability to resupply, rearm, etc .
A war of attrition that they cant win.
Have a good day mate.:)

My other thought is dont generals always paint these doom and gloom scenarios inorder to get a bigger slice of the defense budget pie?

Jay Farquharson said...

The NORK Military is 1.9 million full time Regular Forces, 5.8 million Reservists, ( 2 months training every year after 6 month basic, year and a half MOS).

Funny thing, other than Grenada, Panema and the Gulf War, none of the many, many other wars of choice of the US since WSII, worked out as advertised.

Thanks Anon for pointing out my mistake on the headline. I have corrected it.

One of my closest friends is a South Korean/Canadian citizen. He also has a very good understanding of North Korea. In his opinion .... North Korea may not have the sophisticated weaponry of the U.S./South Korea/Japan/etc. .... but they do understand how to wage war and how to survive under extreme conditions. They are fiercely nationalistic (when compared to their South Korean cousins), and they will unite if a war imposed on them. My friend also likes to point out that we should think of the North Koreans as a present day Sparta .... and like Sparta 2500 years ago .... you really do not want to get into a war with them.

fazman said...

Jay those manpower figures are paper, feeding , clothing and arming such a force is logistically next to impossible, then you have those who simply dont report for duty.
You really do have to factor in the paper divisions of the worlds 4th most powerful army in 91.

fazman said...

True perhaps but when you batter your enemy with catapults there swordsmanship counts for little.

Bringing catapaults to a gun, tank and artillary fight isn't productive or a method of sucess.

Btw, Spartan's were Hopilites, they used aspix's, ( 3/4 body shields), 14 foot spears, and body armour, in a phalanx formation in which the press of man and spear engaged in a shoving match until one side broke, then were slaughtered when they ran away.

Guys..
1. Remember that the US lost the first Korean war, please
2. Back then China helped NK - came as a big surprise. This time around expect Russians and Iranians (and perhaps China again) to covertly help NK and make this as costly to the US as possible. These nations are at different stages of hostility with each other. They will use this opportunity to bleed the US and tie them down, while at the same time exploiting the reduction of force and attention elsewhere, I. E. In the middle east
3. Living in Asia, I can assure you that they know hardship much much more than a US soldier. Do not underestimate their resolve and their ingenuity. You would regret it.

I mean most of that armour and artillery belongs in a museum, the article l posted estimates 25% of ammo is past useby.
The catapult is a metaphore for airpower , and mlrs systems along with radars that will pinpoint these "hidden" units for devestating counter fire.
T72, t60, and damn t34s are target practice.

fazman said...

Firstly l think this entire situation will soon revert to the usual bluff and condemnation that weve seen in the past.
That said no one questions the tenacity of n.k troops but times have moved on and technology in this instance fighting an archaic enemy will prevail.
Bottom line the NK first strikes
May well be devestating but airpower will silence it in short order. NK will be fighting blind snd have zero ability to burn through u.s jamming.

Caecus said...

If a full-scale war breaks out, you can expect intense combat against a fanatical and competent enemy prepared to take enormous casualties. If the Americans commit themselves to a ground-war, they will be facing the kind of warfare that hasn't been seen since the likes of Iwo Jima, and this time flamethrowers are banned. Overwhelming naval and air power isn't going to dislodge an enemy who is entrenched inside mountain ranges, and someone will have to fight all the way to Pyongyang. And this the time the fanatical enemy has nuclear technology, imagine capturing a NORK position or base only to have a dirty bomb go off.

fazman said...

Correct , but l am assuming no invasion of n.k and holding the line of the dmz, in which case air and naval power will play an enormous role in the opening days.
Yeah l agree taliban got nothing on these guys if you were to fight past the dmz or a moderate buffer zone.

fazman said...

Qestion for jay, with all these executions and purges over the years of top brass and political enities do you feel that perhaps in the opening days of a conflictand with the ensuing mayhem that inits if the n.k military may take the opportunity to attempt a coup or a valkerie type operation against kim themselves. ?

@Caecus - fully agree. This war will be bloody and horrible and insane. . Or it will be over quickly but at huge costs to us all

TWN said...

A German Artillery Sgt once described his experience on the Eastern front, I paraphrase," we had better trained men and better Artillery, but they had mass and would just overwhelm us", North Korea may have older and not as technical sophisticated weaponry but the have mass and they know how to use what they have, they should not be underestimated. History shows many examples of arrogance and stupidity, the North vs the South, British Empire Vs the Boers, Russia Vs Japan,Britain and France Vs German 1940, Germany Vs USSR, UN Vs China and NK, the US Vs North Vietnam. This is not to say that NK could defeat SK and the US, but it will be one hell of a fight and after the NK hits SK's 24 nuclear power plants and those of Japan the Northern Hemisphere, will be gone in short order.

They didnt have the dmz killing zone, mlrs.and 110% airsuperiority. Much of their artillery (which is the bulk of the n.k threat ) pisitions are known a f are already targeted, those that arent will give their positions away after the 1st volley.
N.k also cannot affird to use all their ballistic missiles in a conflict as they will wish to keep in reserve as a further deterrent. , fire them all and youve no detterent left.
I prey there is no conflict but if there is then l agree with some analysts who put it as 6 weeks max with casualities far lower than these worst case scenarios due in part to the souths excellent civil defence and subway shelter system and the immediate airforce response to the nork artillery.
As for the armour that belongs in a museum a10 has one word bbrrrrttttt

Start war with NK and you have a second Vietnam.
Far worse than that.

NK may lose 1/2 of their army, all the aircraft and warship, and they continue to fight.
If the war became in land occupation, this only result in a hell never seen. And on the reunification of the Korea.

Not the type of reunification yours hope.

fazman,

Nope, it's not Africa, Latin America ore the Middle East.

The Regime has spies everywhere and NORK Generals are surrounded by Peers and Underlings, more than willing to betray them at the slightest whiff of disloyalty, for the perks.

You can't just load your ill gotten gains on a decrepid Lisinov LI-2, ( DC-3 Clone) and flee the country if your coup goes sideways, nor can you call the former Colonial Power and have them send a G-6 with Caviar, Hookers and Champaign, to whisk you away to a joyful reunion with your Swiss Bank Accounts.

NORK soldiers are loyal to the Regime, not their General.
