No Russian Sanctions Waiver For Exxon

L.A. Times: Trump administration refuses to let Exxon Mobil drill for oil in Russia

The Trump administration has denied a request from Exxon Mobil Corp. to waive U.S. sanctions against Russia to allow the company to resume oil drilling around the Black Sea.

Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin said Friday in a brief statement that the administration “will not be issuing waivers to U.S. companies, including Exxon, authorizing drilling prohibited by current Russian sanctions.”

Exxon said it understood the decision, while suggesting that the outcome will merely help European oil companies operating under less-stringent restrictions.

The decision comes two days after the news that the energy giant was seeking a waiver to resume a joint venture with Rosneft, a Russian state-owned oil company.

Had the White House said "yes" this would have been the correct decision even if the media and other ideologically minded critics would have attacked it and those supporting it. Often times the essence of character and good leadership is doing that which is right in the face of opposition. If POTUS refrained from doing the right thing because he was worried about "optics" or how the critics might respond, not good.

The EXXON/ Rosenoft deal's about as corrupt as it gets.

What precsisley is corrupt abouf it? This was an approximately 500 billion dollar oil deal. America and Russia would have benefited tremendously from such a deal.

Unfortunately this was shot to h!ll because someone stupidly chose to support the chump, corrupt, and evil government of Ukraine and impose sanctions on Russia. At the time, I pointed out here and elsewhere this was the stupidest decision ever made by a major power in world history. I stand by that analysis.

As it stands, someone else will get this deal so carefully negotiated by Rex Tillerson. He probably took his current job to try and salvage this deal and America. Now the whole thing is shot to h!ll.

Prediction: the French under President Marine Le Pen are going to get this deal since the Americans foolishly chose to freeze themselves out of it due to a stupid and unforced error. During Ms. Le Pen's trip to Russia they very likely negotiated this and she showed herself to be a statesman essentially guaranteeing her electoral b ictory.

Among tne most important actions a nation state can undrtake is 1.)ensuring the nation has access to a stable and reasonably priced supply of oil and 2.)procuring good working relations with the world's major powers.

This deal would have accomplished both. Again, hpw exactly is this "corrupt?"

The article fails to explain why the deal is "corrupt." The deal would have increased American oil supplies, increased high paying American jobs, and improved relations with a major world power. Unfortunately certain idiots in the US government chose to undermine all of this by going out of their way to support the cortupt, chump, and evil Ukraine government. Now the French among all people are going to get this deal!! Ms. Le Pen was cagey smart to meet with the Russians when she did. She demonstrated that she is a statesman, she likely secured her countty a major oil deal that the Americans foolishly shut themselves out of due to an unforced error, and this is possible assuming the French are smart enough to elect her. The French are VERY smart. As such, Marine Le Pen will be their next President.
