RBTH: Russia successfully tests hypersonic missile

Unconfirmed report says the missile reaches 8 times the speed of sound.

Russia’s new hypersonic anti-ship Zircon missile has reached eight times the speed of sound during the test, a source with Russia’s defense sector told TASS.

"During the tests of the missile it was confirmed that its speed reaches eight Mach," the source said. Mach is the ratio of the speed of a body to the speed of sound, which is often used with a numeral to indicate the speed of sound.

The source did not specify when and from which platform the missile was launched but noted that Zircon missiles can be launched from universal launching platforms 3C14 which are also used for the Onyx and Caliber missiles.

I really don't see a convincing set of countermeasures the US navy has to hypersonic missile swarms. This is going to be a big problem in 5 years time. Lasers will not work, kinetic energy weapons such as railguns won't work, phalanx won't work. ..a combination of all three won't work either, and Russia, China and Iran have tons of those missiles by then (and at slower speed have already)

If you can track it, you can shoot it.

That's not true
Which weapon system can currently shoot down hypersonic missile swarms?

Lasers are deployed.

The USG did not give you the capabilities.

I think he means that you're not chasing the missile up the tail pipe, so as long as your anti missile has range and active homing why wont it hit.

Problem with the Patriot in 1991 was that it hit more toward the tail instead of the warhead.
