CNN: Putin meets with Tillerson in Russia as Syria rift deepens
(CNN)US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, as a diplomatic rift between the two nations deepens over a chemical attack in Syria.
The meeting is taking place at the Kremlin along with Tillerson's counterpart, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the US State Department and Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed.
The talks come after Lavrov issued Tillerson a warning Wednesday against any further US strikes on the Syrian regime. Russia is Syria's most powerful ally.
The two top diplomats had sat down together earlier in the day to work through the fallout of last week's chemical attack in northwestern Syria, which plunged the old Cold War enemies to a new low.

WNU Editor: So much for my contacts in Moscow telling me that Russian President Putin was not going to meet any U.S. official until he has met President Trump. So why the last minute meeting .... genuine worry in Moscow that this was going down a road that no one in Moscow is ready to go down right now. In short .... Trump called Putin's bluff sending Tillerson to Moscow, and Putin folded.

Maybe Putin folded, maybe your contacts were just flat wrong. We are all human and sometimes we and our "contacts" make errors. frankly this has been headed down a road that I think any sane person would agree is good for NO ONE
As for Russian officials not wanting to go down this road, I'm pretty sure this applies to US officials as well. The sane ones that is.
My contacts were wrong (They are more surprised than I am). But personally .... I am happy that Putin did meet Tillerson.
What a wimp Putin is. The Americans should be glad that they have such 5pushover in Kreml. Even Yeltsin had more balls.
I'm happy they are meeting too.:-) On this we seem to be in agreement. If you are meeting, perhaps you are not solving anything. If you aren't meeting, there seems no way you can solve anything. Regardless who folded or who was wrong, it is good they are meeting.
I was young during Cold War I. As such, my memory is admittedly sketchy. As a diplomat during the time, any gaps in my memory or understanding you can fill in would be much appreciated.:-)
As I recall, the rhetoric especially from the American (our side as in my home country) got rather heated at times toward the Soviet Union but when it came time for the parties to negotiate the US delegation was very respectful to the Soviet delegation.
Hopefully we can have a repeat here. While the rhetoric has at times been heated on both sides, very respectfully I would say my side (the Americans) has done much to needlessly stoke this coupled with some downright boneheaded policies from the Americans/the "west" toward Russia. Now that the parties are meeting at high levels hopefully this can be conducted with dignity and respect to both sides and we can FIALLY get somewhere.
I've always found it fascinating that when people speak off the cuff we often find out their true opinions about things. I find it encouraging that Mr. Tillerson asked why the American taxpayers need to pay for Ukraine. As the person who negotiated the half billion dollar oil deal with Russia, on a personal level he has to be WAY beyond livid at the Obama Administration for imposing sanctions n Russia over Ukraine upending this carefully worked out deal that would have been hugely beneficial to both countries.
I'm assuming he took the job out of a perceived patriotic duty to his country. Since he knows and has had good working relations with many important people in many important countries including Russia he probably felt and feels he can make a value added contribution here.
I'd love a window into his thoughts right abut now. I'm sure he's thinking that the ill conceived operation in Syria by his boss has made the job of negotiating much harder than it needed to be and he's probably right.
