Will President Trump's Approach To North Korea Make The Region Safer?

The Independent editorial: Obama's 'strategic patience' strategy toward North Korea is over – but Trump could make the region safer

The problem of Korea will have received intensive scrutiny at the Florida summit between Presidents Xi and Trump. Through such American brinkmanship and ‘backdoor’ political pressure from China, Kim could be persuaded to wind his neck in a little.

On the face of it, North Korea doesn’t have a huge amount of skin in the game in Syria. Yet Pyongyang’s condemnation of the US air strike as “an intolerable act of aggression against a sovereign state” is more than the usual bluster from this end of the “axis of evil”. The bombing of one of Bashar al-Assad’s airfields must have sent premonitions through the minds of Kim Jong-un and his generals: they could be next. The deployment of significant American naval assets to the South China Sea must also represent evidence to the North Korean leadership that Donald Trump wants to send a message to all of his nation’s enemies in the world: don’t mess with America.

WNU Editor: President Obama's strategy of "strategic patience" did make sense when Kim Jong-un assumed power and there was hope that he would be a reformer. But Kim Jong-Un became anything but a reformer .... and the threat of his nuclear arsenal .... albeit very small at the moment .... has put the North Korean crisis front and center for the U.S. and its allies in the Far East. And as for President Trump (maybe) making the region safer .... that is not in the hands of the U.S. right now.

Update: I concur .... President Trump's options are limited .... Move of U.S. Warships Shows Trump Has Few Options on North Korea (New York Times).

As I said before, the Syrian strikes were about North Korea...

It was a calculated moved. I suspect this is a show of strength against N.Korea, and I would wager there are some within the Trump administration hoping that North Korea shoots first, giving them the excuse and lawful means to take out the North Korean regime.

D. Plowman. I will not bet against you on that one.(Trump administration hoping that North Korea shoots first, giving them the excuse and lawful means to take out the North Korean regime).
