Would Britain Go To War Against Spain Over Gibraltar?

The Telegraph: Theresa May 'would go to war' to defend the sovereignty of Gibraltar

Theresa May would go to war to defend the sovereignty of Gibraltar just as Margaret Thatcher did with the Falklands, a former Tory leader has suggested.

Lord Howard said the British Government will stand by Gibraltar during Brexit talks amid claims of an EU “land grab” for the territory by Spain.

It came as Spain confirmed that it would not initially block an independent Scotland's attempts to join the European Union (EU)

Alfonso Dastis, Madrid's foreign minister, has reportedly said Spain would not veto an independent Scotland's EU hopes - while stressing he does not want to see the country leave the United Kingdom.

This morning the Prime Minister told Gibraltar's chief minister that Britain will never allow Spain to take over the peninsula against its will.

Sir Michael Fallon, the Defence Secretary, has also pledged to "protect" Gibraltar "all the way".

Portugal is a long time ally of Britain going back 400 years.

Britain really did not want Portugal to declare war against Germany during WW1.
The Portuguese armament was much appreciated by the Germans. It allowed them to fight on for years.

But several decades later and against Spain they would do better?

"British media reports that their governmental health scheme, the National Health Service (NHS), is near financial collapse. Care is being rationed at an accelerating rate as funding is exhausted. Bureaucrats are using complex mathematical formulas to determine who gets care based on how many more productive, taxpaying years they have left in their life." - PJM

It falls faster with unbridled lust of for mass immigration especially illegal immigration.

Anonymous,

Very respectfully please read the posts in their entirety before commenting. Had you done so you would know I obviously don't work for Russia.

As for my position on this, a better question is will EU nations go to war on behalf of Spain. Also, the EU is a doomed entity anyway. It's leaders need to be working on ensuring it's ultimate end is an orderly one. Being the ideologues they are unfortunately they must dig themselves a deeper hole. As such, I'm sure they won't do this.

As for NATO, it is a net drain on the US. The nature of the "alliance" needed to be renegotiated at least as far back as 1997. In light of the current US position, changing the nature of this "alliance" is even more imperative.

As for Mr. Putin's position on this, I have no idea. If he is the pure eeeeeevil that American leaders seem intent on portraying him as, he would probably prefer the current weak, corrupt, and over regulated EU as opposed to strong, vibrant, independent countries who can offer sustained resistance.

As I suspect, while he is far from perfect, he is not the pure evil he is being portrayed as. As such, since EU supporters and their leaders have shown themselves to be insane of late, he'd probably prefer strong, vibrant, and independent nations as they make better trading partners and are much more likely to behave rationally and will be more likely to refrain from rash and stupid behaviors.

Again, the EU is a doomed entity anyway. To support such an entity would be a waste of precious resources.

LMFAO,

84% of Gibralter citizens voted for remain.

As a Hard Brexit shapes up, Scotland will vote on Independence. If Scotland goes Independent, so will Northern Ireland, and maybe Gibralter, and they will remain in the EU.

Britain will be the Union of England and Wales at best, losing over 40% of GDP, and an unknown amount of EU and Global Trade.

Greece, Spain, Portugal & Italy all have severe fiscal problems.

Gibraltar wants to be tied to that?

86% of Gibralter's economy is trade in services to the EU, which amonts to $1.622 billion, drives a 7.8% annual growth in GDP, ( the US's is 1.9%) and allows for a median income of $70,364 per person, a year.

Given a choice between a EU based income of $60,514 or a "British" based income of $9,850, ( or less), I'm sure the inhabitant's of Gibralter with make the right choices for their future.

If Gibraltar is part of Spain, it is just another Spanish port. Spain is no tiger.

Gibralter has it's own Parliement, is considered by the EU to be a "Federated State", and Britain only manages Gibralter's Foriegn Policy and Defence.

When Gibralter seperates from the Kingdom of England and Wales to remain in the EU, it will be as an independent Federated State, not as part of Spain.

I am sure Spain will not put pressure on Gibraltar.

Today we had a chemical attack in Idlib province. It was timed to take advantage of the civil disturbances.

Gibraltans should take note.
