Is Russia Duping American Conservatives With Fake News Thereby Sowing Chaos In the U.S. Political System?

Laura Reston, The Atlantic: Russia Has Weaponized Fake News to Sow Chaos

The Kremlin's influence campaign goes far beyond Trump's victory. Their latest unsuspecting targets: American conservatives.

Donald Trump and his top advisers have spent the past four months under near constant scrutiny: Two congressional committees, the FBI and CIA—not to mention the entire news media—have launched separate investigations into the role Russia played in orchestrating his victory. Washington rarely sees such intense intrigue surrounding a sitting president in his first 100 days, a time traditionally devoted to policy initiatives, not police interrogations. But focusing on the election obscures the true extent of Russia’s influence: Today, months after Hillary Clinton’s emails were hacked, the Kremlin continues to deploy a host of digital tools to sow doubt and discord in the United States on an almost daily basis.

WNU Editor: I love it when progressives go out of there way to explain conservatives .... let alone explaining Russian actions. And in Laura Reston's column above .... she does not even know that the fiercest anti-Trumpers and critics of President Trump are among Republican and non-Republican conservatives who do not see Trump as a conservative ....and they are damn unhappy about that. But such is the state of U.S. main stream media today .... everything is being looked at through a progressive lens .... and they do not understand why they are always being disappointed. In my case .... I have been a faithful consumer of U.S. news since the early 1980s, and if there was one thing I have learned since the election of last year is that the respect and credibility that the U.S main stream once had with many .... and I include myself as one of them .... is no longer there. I am now deeply sceptical and distrustful of what the U.S. news media posts and prints ..... and the last time that I felt like this is when I had to rely on Russian news organisations like TASS and Pravda for my news while growing up in the former Soviet Union. But I understand why many like Laura Reston in the main stream media are upset with what is happening. This was not expected .... and the search for why this has happened is forcing many to go down this road of blaming everyone and "outside forces" like the Russians for the election of someone like President Trump .... and not at themselves, their policies, and how they treat those who may have a different point of view. Am I surprised by this visceral reaction in the U.S. .... I have to say yes. There is a now an incredible amount of hate and anger in the U.S. directed against President Trump, Russians, and those who disagree with the progressive and media narrative. I say that it is too bad that they are filled with this reservoir of hate .... because there are missing an incredible moment in history right now. I personally do not know if the Trump White House is in chaos and disarray and that everything is about to implode, that impeachment is just around the corner, and that high crimes and misdemeanours will be found next week/month/year. What I do know .... and what I tell everyone else .... is that we should step back ..... and look at what is unfolding in front of us. We are living in a incredible time where there is a President who has thrown out conventional practice and is exposing all the "rot and crap" that exists in Washington. We are definitely never going to see another President like President Trump in our lifetime .... the U.S. political establishment is going to make sure about that .... but for the moment enjoy the show, because I know that for political junkies like myself .... this is going to get even more insane.

On June 17, 1972, "Watergate" was just a botched criminal break in at a DC Office/Residential building.

By August 8th, 1974, the impeached Nixon resigned, 68 people had gone to jail, three different investigations had been spun off from the initial inquiry, 19 more would follow over the next three years, exposing hundreds of illegal operations by the POTUS and the Alphabet Agencies, in violation of the Constitution, leading to a host of laws and regulations restricting those agencies violations of American's Civil Rights.

Of course, 'Murkin's got Watergate Fatigue, so by the late '70's the reforms stopped, the Watergate Crew was back in time for Iran-Contra, then Bush II, and now the few survivor's and their protege's are "in like Flynn" with Trump.

Jay,

Hopefully some of these "things" which involve high level connections with people high up in the Russian government whom these Russian power brokers respect can help us negotiate an end to Cold War 2.

This would be a very good thing for America and Americans. Unfortunately you haven't dhown any concern or compassion for Americans or there welfare that I'm aware of. Perhaps I missed it.

By the way when exactly did the GOP platform change on Ukraine? Is the GOP now recognizing Crimea is Russian and calling for an immediate end to all sanctions against Russia? If so, this would be a smart move. Jumping into the Ukraine situation was among the dumbest moves made by a major power in the history of civilization. A platform change to undo such stupidity would be a welcome move.

The GOP Platform Platform was changed unilaterally, 6 days ater the GOP Delegates had voted on it, over their objections, one day after Flynn's last meeting with the Russians.

As I've written before, physical comedy is a cornerstone of comedy, and one of the key forms of physical comedy is the self inflicted wound.

Lord Smallgloves and the GOP, like Bush II before him is an American self inflicted wound that anybody with any interest in the well being of American's and the Global Order saw coming over 17 years ago.

So, Mr. Flynn had a meeting with the Russians and the GOP platform gets changed shortly thereafter. Was this correlated? Possibly. If so, part of leadership will sometimes mean doing that which is right in the face of stiff opposition of people such as the so called "delegates." This is part of why Mr. Flynn was likely tapped for the job for his connections to the Russian leadership who trust/trusted him which could have been extremely helpful in negotiating an end to Cold War 2.

Candidate Trump had this exactly right when he struck a more conciliatory position toward Russia and he was right when he suggested he'd be open to recognizing Crimea as Russian. Since he got elected, he's changed his position. Perhaps he is being blackmailed by unscrupulous elements who wish to exacerbate Cold War 2, a war we don't need, and we lack the ability to prosecute effectively. Maybe this is what we need to be investigating instead of so called Russian "hacking" or "collusion."

Flynn, quite possibly, broke a bunch of US Laws, in his "possible" collusion with known Russian Agents.

We will know for sure as the case winds forward, and it goes to trial, or plea, or no trial at all.

One of the Flynn Fail's was that Flynn was a Unregistered Foreign Agent at the time, in Violation of the Law, lied in Testimony to Congress, and the TrumpFail, was they knew, and said nothing.

This is not Hawaii 5-0 or even CSI where the case is wrapped up in a max of 2 or 3, 45 minute episodes.

Like I keep pointing out, from the break in, to the impeachment, took years, back at a time when the Republican's in the House and Seate put "America First" over partizan squabbling.

If the Trump Team told Flynn to break a bunch of US Laws, then they also broke a bunch of US Laws.

There's this funny thing in American Politics.

Only American Presidents can set and engage in Foreign Policy.

Cantidates and their Campaigns for the Presidency from either party arn't allowed to, nor are the Nominee's after the Caucus.

That mean's a Cantidate right up to the Inaugeration, can propose changes in FP all they want, but they can't engage with Agents of a Foreign Government, about that policy.

It date's all the way back to the early days of the United States, when the US feared that either Britain or France, would be able to "buy" the Presidency and put an end to America Independence.

BTW, those , as you put it, "so called delegates", are nominated and elected by the members of the Party at the District level, attend the Caucus on their own time and dime, get elected by their fellow Delegates to committee's to create the Party Platform, which get's voted on by all the Delegates, the same way they elect the Party's Nominee.

If you don't like the "so called" Delegates setting policy, then you shouldn't like the "so called" Delegates also choosing Hair Furour.

It's called Democracy.

You don't know this and yet they let you vote?

LMFAO.

Jay,

You mention the "global order." The current "global order" has been failing Americans for the past 20+ years at least. As such, many have recognized the need to change it.

The current "global order" is failing and cannot be saved even if someone wanted to save it. The only question now is will the change be better, worse, or "meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

America could have had a mm major role in shaping the new order abd it still could. Unfortunately having hostile relations with Russia and China is not going to be helpful for America in having an influence on shaping the new system.

As for your comments on Mr. Flynn, I understand this. I think everyone does. At this point, it seems if any laws were broken, it was done so to advance American interests and to undercut the insane policies of the previous Administration that were/are placing Americans in mortal danger. Sometimes men and women of good conscious are called on to do the right thing in the face of crooked/corrupt opposition. Doing the right thing in such circumstances is/would be true patriorism and character.

If there's a silver linning here, by firing Comey this appears to have moved this case forward. As long as it lingers, the type of negotiations neccessary to defuse Cold War 2 are going to be problematic to conduct. Meanwhile America and Americans are in mortal danger. The sooner we end Cold War 2 the better. As such, the sooner this gets resolved the better.

So did Nixon, killed the Peace Deal, added 5 years to the Vietnam War, got 2.1 million more people killed, including over 25,000 more Americans.

Had to legitimize China, start the process of offshoring US jobs to China, abandon South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, to get his "decent interval",

LMFAO,

So did Reagan

Jay,

"If you don't like so called delegates setting foreign policy..." Actually I don't. DJT was not first or even second choice but I had high hopes that he could negotiate an end to Cold War 2 and that these so called Russian connections could help us here. Perhaps it still can.

I'm glad someone had the courage and forethought to over ride them. As stated, I call it leadership of which part of it is doing that which is right in the face of stiff opposition. It's a pity this hasn't come to fruition.

You mention Nixon an Reagan. These situations are completely different from today's situation. As for Nixon, he is the second most despised person in US history taking second place to Bush II. As for Raegen, he is generally despised among all Americans under age 50. For better or worse, neither of these men with the policies tbey espoused could be elected to any office, anywhere in America today.

Now I will address each possible "trade" you mention. 1.) "Trump Towers Moscow for Crimea." Crimea is already Russian. There's nothing America can do to change that even if it wanted to and it's not like America can keep sanctions in place against Russia indefinitely anyway. At this point, Vlad likes the sanctions. I think I've discussed this elsewhere. Recognizing reality has huge benefits. Benefit: recognize Crimea as Russian, defuse tensions surrounding Cold War 2 and lay groundwork for further negotiations to hopefully end this. Costs: $0. Side benefit: the chump Ukraine is a net liability. Savings: in the billions. Priceless: lessening the phyiscal and financial risks to American. If DJT were to ask for "Trump Tower Moscow", the Russians would likely laugh in his face. Now if he can pull this off, I'm pretty sure Americans and most of the world would have no problem with the man who helped defuse and posdibly negotiate an end to Cold War 2 profiting in some small way from his efforts.

2.) "Trump Univeristy for Donbass." While some tweaking might be in order, in general see my response to your first possible trade. Since I don't want to run over again, I will limit my response at this time. As above, should DJT ask for this the Russians would likely laugh in face. If he can achieve this, the worldd at large would likely
be most appreciative and would have little to no problem with him profiting in some way for his efforts.

3.) As for the Baltics, the Baltic States are NOT American. They do NOT have American interests at heart and will GLADLY sacrifice Americans and their interests if it will advance them in their struggle for dominance with Russia. Frankly everytime I hear one of these leaders speak it is quite nauseating. Benefits to dumping these chumps: enormous financial savings as supporting these chumps is has ENORMOUS costs with no corresponding benefits. Intangible but more valuable benefit: when the negotiations to end Cold War 1 were concluded, the Russians believe there was an agreement not to expand NATO to Russia's borders. By cutting loose these chumps/losers who are an enormous drain on us with no corresponding benefit we'd be seen as honorable and fulfilling an agreement reached in good faith by the Russians. This would be of enormous benefit in future negotiations with tne Russians to hopefully end Cold War 2. In the short term tensions would be diffused. Costs to America; zero dollars.

Should DJT assuming he can accomplish tnis should he profit in some way very few people in the world and even fewer Americans would have a problem with this. As for the Baltic States, once they no longer have their American puppets with them, I think wr can expect sanner behavior from tnem. The world and especially Americans would be most appreciative.
