Russia Is Breaking UN Sanctions On North Korea

DW: Russia steps up North Korea support to constrain US

In spite of international sanctions on North Korea's communist regime, Russia has been increasing fuel exports to Pyongyang and filling in the supply gap created by China halting trade. Julian Ryall reports.

Despite efforts by the United Nations to impose isolating sanctions on North Korea in response to the country's continued development of nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles, trade between Russia and North Korea soared more than 85 percent in the first four months of the year.

Citing Russian customs data, the Voice of America broadcaster has reported that bilateral trade climbed to $31.83 million (29 million euros) in the January-March quarter, with the vast majority being energy products going over the border into the North.

WNU Editor: After all of these years I still cannot figure out what exactly is Russia's foreign policy when it comes to North Korea. Aside from sharing a small border and some Cold War legacies .... why bust UN sanctions to just make a few bucks. But apparently .... for Moscow at this moment in time .... that is just why they are doing what they are doing.

"Don't poke the bear with a stick." If you mean the "Russian bear", this is the country with the largest and most advanced nuclear arsenal, has the world's best intel services, and has conventional military forces who are among the best led, best trained, and most highly motivated in the world. This combined with the world's best cyber warriors makes them a very formidable force.

While there may be a time and a place where one might need to "poke" them, such an action would need to be done with extreme prudence and whomever does such a thing would need to consider the consequences very carefully.

While we cannot "know" with 100% certainty the outcome of any war inn advance, it is clear that any war against Russia would be extremely costly As such, one would need to make certain such an action is absolutely necessary. Also, there is much blow back that results from any military action that cannot always be foreseen in advance. Again, extreme prudence needs to be undertaken in any such maters.
