Sputnik: Russian FM Lavrov Refutes Claims That He Discussed Comey's Dismissal With Trump

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has refuted the claims that he had ostensibly discussed the dismissal of the former FBI director Comey with US President Donald Trump during the minister's meeting with the US President on May 10.

Earlier this week, mainstream media outlets like the Washington Post, New York Times published articles claiming that Trump had told Lavrov that firing Comey ameliorated "great pressure."

"We did not touch on that topic at all," Lavrov told reporters on Saturday.

Update #2: Russian FM Sergei Lavrov denies Comey firing brought up in Trump meeting (USA Today)

WNU Editor: If there is one thing that I know about the Russian Foreign Ministry and that I can share with this readership is that they usually stay away from commenting on what the U.S. news media publishes and posts. But when they come across a story that they believe is fake/fabrication/not true .... and it involves them personally .... they always react with lightning speed. What has gotten Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov all worked up is this story .... Trump told Russians that firing ‘Nut Job’ Comey eased pressure from investigation. (NYT) .... a story that has since been carried by all the major wire services and news media last night .... Report: Trump says firing ‘nut job’ Comey took off pressure (AP). This story has also eclipsed President Trump's trip to the Middle East .... being the headline in many news broadcasts. And while I do not know who the New York Times' source is and/or whether the story is true ..... I do know that Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov believes it is a fake story and a deliberate lie.

The New York Times reports that President Donald Trump told Russian diplomats in the Oval Office that firing former FBI Director James Comey relieved “great pressure” on him, calling Comey “a real nut job” and adding “I’m not under investigation.” White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has not disputed the account, which was derived from a document summarizing the meeting. The May 10 meeting with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, the day after Comey was fired, made headlines on Monday after the Washington Post reported that President Trump had disclosed highly classified information to Russian diplomats.

Fred,

The Russian account or the NY Times? Russian leadership appears to value integrity. As for the NY Times, not so much.

Since long range memory is not always what we think it is, perhaps the conversation took place but the Russians clearly don't think it did.

Since Russia has so much integrity, why not relocate? Spicer accepts the account that summed up the meeting. Only Russia does not...so Russia must be right?

The White House repeated its assertion that a "thorough investigation will confirm that there was no collusion between the campaign and any foreign entity."

It did not deny the Times report that Trump was critical of Comey to the Russians the day after he fired him.

The Times reported Trump noted the Russia investigation as he told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak of his decision to fire Comey.

"I just fired the head of the FBI. He was crazy, a real nut job," the Times reported that Trump said during the May 10 meeting. "I faced great pressure because of Russia. That's taken off."

White House spokesman Sean Spicer called the president's rhetoric part of his deal-making.

Fred,
In the past .... no question .... the New York Times. Today .... I am no longer sure .... and with good reason. This blog over the years has detailed how biased the media has become and how it impacts their reporting .... reaching its peak with their ridiculous predictions of a Hillary Clinton landslide .... even after the polls closed.

The New York Times was the biggest promoter of this spectacular disaster .... and when anyone takes the time to analyse why .... they will find out what I have noted more than once. The New York Times does not post or report on stories that does not fit their narrative, and publish anything when it does. In the case of Lavrov .... an anonymous source says something that they like (who is that anonymous source .... a holdover from the Obama administration who is waiting to be replaced .... a disgruntled Republic appointee .... they never tell us) .... and they go ahead and post it. Same thing with the Washington Post .... they hear from an anonymous source that Trump revealed secret intel to the Russians, and they post it anyway without even contacting the people who were in the room on what is their take of that claim. This is the fundamental problem with the U.S. main stream media today .... reporting has been replaced by advocacy on positions that they like, and discredit or insult those who may have a different point of view. And if their reporting so happens to be wrong or wanting later on .... ignore it and move on .... giving only added support to critics of the media that they have becoming nothing more but "drive-by media".

This why this blog always tries its best to use multiple sources .... and from different countries .... and if necessary .... my own opinion. And then I let you .... and all the readers .... decide what makes sense to you or not.

As for Sean Spicer not denying the New York Times story .... I have also seen the stories, and after your comment I investigated it further. Sean Spicer's answer (and focus) was on blaming the media for covering this story and not current national security. The impression I have is that he treated the question with contempt but typical of the media .... and decided to ignore it by not denying or supporting the claim.

Russian denial!

This is what Sean Spicer said ....

“By grandstanding and politicizing the investigation into Russia’s actions, James Comey created unnecessary pressure on our ability to engage and negotiate with Russia,” Spicer said in a statement to the press. “The investigation would have always continued, and obviously, the termination of Comey would not have ended it. Once again, the real story is that our national security has been undermined by the leaking of private and highly classified conversations.”

nah. the real story is that Trump delighted in dumping Comey and told Russian why! Grandstanding Not at all The real story is that Trump is under investigation and was delighted to dump Comey to end that investigation...hardly leaking when the story was out there. Hushing the truth in this instance is not a bad thing. Revealing top secrets to Russia and betraying an ally IS.

Officials spokesperson for the Russian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, said that the above-mentioned article in The Washington Post about the exchange of secret information between Putin and Trump was fake news that deserves no attention.

Pravda.Ru
so this then is the "new truth"?
