The Guardian: USS Fitzgerald: seven missing sailors found dead in flooded area of ship

The seven US navy sailors missing after their destroyer collided with a container ship off the east coast of Japan have been found dead.

US and Japanese ships and aircraft launched a huge air and sea search for the crew but they were found on Sunday in the flooded quarters of the damaged destroyer USS Fitzgerald, the US 7th fleet said in a statement.

WTF was the Phillipine ships doing?

Looking for targets?

Playing chicken with several ships at once?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4614624/Young-sailor-identified-one-seven-missing-sea.html

Although registered in the Phillipines the ship's crew could be from anywhere.

This just shouldn't happen in 2017...ffs..7 dead sailors...those guys/girls were probably in their 20s-30s..there better be good answers, learnings and changes for the future

The Phillipine flagged ship's course looks like a bug track.

Why didnt they open the berthing areas sooner?
Could they have been alive?
They have no tech to show where crew is on a ship?

Jim,

It is not so much a matter of tech.

It is a matter of what the military would let out.

It is also a the sad state of journalism that they do not anticipate your questions, are uninterested in all aspects of the matter, and do not dig.

Some of the berthing is amidships where the erratic, zig zagging container ship hit.

Jim,

try variations of these search terms: "berthing diagram" destroyer

and maybe add 'Arleigh'

This shows the berthing arrangement of an earlier class of destroyer.

A lot of stuff is evolutionary and not revolutionary. so the berthing maybe in similar place.

There is no open tear or gash showing in the hull going from above the water line to below the after line (at least that I have seen).

But maybe a seam split open under water due to buckling. Interior bulkheads may have buckled, jamming hatches and trapping people.

I wonder how much room to maneuver the destroyer had in crowded shipping lanes?

Officials from the Japanese coast guard were questioning crew members of the ACX Crystal, which is operated by the Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen K.K., and are treating the incident as a case of possible professional negligence, said Masayuki Obara, a regional coast guard official.
