Reuters: U.S. Senate votes near unanimously for Russia, Iran sanctions
The U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly on Thursday for legislation to impose new sanctions on Iran and Russia, and force President Donald Trump to get Congress' approval before easing any existing sanctions on Russia.
The 100-member Senate backed the measure by a margin of 98-2.
Republican Senator Rand Paul and Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, were the only two "no" votes.
The bill includes new sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile program and other activities not related to the international nuclear agreement reached with the United States and other world powers.

When in a hole, the first thing one needs to do is to STOP DIGGING!! With these actions the US government is only digging a deeper hole for itself and for America.
Of course Germany and Austria are condemning this idiotic and mean spirited move on the part of the US government. Germany and Austria need to grow their economies and improve their national security. Sanctions against Russia of any kind let alone expanding the ones already in place that never should have been put in place in the first place are counterproductive to either of those goals.
Eventually the Europeans will have no choice but to lift their sanctions and as the Europeans grow even more frustrated with such stupid policies expect more candidates like Marine Le Pen to arise that will peruse such a policy before Western Europe is forced by necessity to lift their sanctions against Russia.
At that time, the US will be forced to do so as well and will be looking even stupider than it already does, that is assuming the Russians do not decide to take more decisive action sooner. By pursuit of such policies all the US accomplishes is to ensure that the inevitable loss of the US dollar as world reserve currency is a hard landing as opposed to the desired soft landing. Since the loss of the dollar as world reserve currency is inevitable and cannot be prevented, negotiations should begin forthwith the major world powers of especially Russia and China to try and ensure a smooth transition for America and its people. If we have hostile relations with these people, I fail to see how this can be done.
A great place to start would be to recognize Russia as, at a minimum, an equal to the United States, act accordingly, and respect its interests and to cease immediately with the reckless accusations against them. Imposing sanctions on them was a bad idea that placed Americans in even graver danger than they already were, doubling down on bad policy by expanding it is even worse. Still worse is a 98-2 vote in support of such insane and reckless policies!!
Kudos to Senators Sanders and Paul to have the common sense to vote no to such insanity. To bad there are not more US leaders who are able to act as statesmen and place the interests of the United States and its people ahead of needing to behave like impudent children.
This is pretty much bipartisan, 98 to zip.
Russia must be pissing off people pretty badly.
