Chinese President Xi Calls President Trump To Discuss North Korea

L.A. Times: In phone call with Trump, China's Xi reiterates calls for calm

Chinese leader Xi Jinping urged restraint in a phone call with President Trump on Saturday, following a week of blustery rhetoric between North Korea and the U.S.

Xi warned that “concerned parties” should avoid “remarks and actions” that could escalate tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to the state-run New China News Agency. He reiterated China’s desire to work with the U.S., citing “common interests” in preserving stability in the region.

Trump understands China’s efforts to resolve the issue, the report said, and both leaders agreed to keep in close contact. The call took place late Friday evening on the East Coast.

WNU Editor: The media narrative is that President Xi called President Trump calling for restraint. My read is different .... this was a very important phone call, and I believe he called President Trump to tell him that China has exhausted all measures in restraining North Korea, and that both China and the U.S. should now work together in formulating a new strategy.

I don't what they exactly say, but a good solution for China would be to remove Kim Jong Un and replace him with a North Korean person more flexible. China has a lot of contact in North Korea. In fact it would be good for everybody.
No regime change, no invasion, no military solution and a "good negotiation".

Jac,

I think you are spot on. There's little I can add but to say something like that could be in the works. Getting China and Russia to agree to sanctiins and getting China to pledge neutrality is the stuff of diplomatic brilliance provided to much was not given up to obtain these things. Perhaps a deal can be arranged whereby the Kims go into exile to a tropical beach somewhere to live out the rest of their days in luxury, comfort, and ease and a more reasonable person can replace him.

Given the diplomatic accomplishments in getting China and Russia to sign on to sanctions and China to pledge neutrality, perhaps the other is also achievable. Let's hope so. I would add, to borrow a poker analogy, POTUS and his team achieved Russian and Chinese agreement on sanctions and the Chinese pledge of neutrality with a very bad hand. Perhaps he really is "the deal maker." With that said there is still allot that can go wrong.
