Zero Hedge: Trump Asked Saudi King For $4 Billion So US Troops Can Leave Syria

The Washington Post has revealed that President Trump attempted to extricate US troops from Syria by asking ally Saudi Arabia to foot the bill for postwar reconstruction and "stabilization" projects in the area of northeast Syria currently occupied by US coalition forces, to the tune of $4 billion. The deal would involve US allies like Saudi Arabia moving into a lead position regarding coalition policy in Syria, while hastening a US exit.

Though the coalition continues to claim that its occupation of Syrian soil is toward anti-terror and humanitarian efforts, including the reestablishment of civilian infrastructure in a region previously controlled by ISIS, America's top general, CENTCOM chief Gen. Joseph Votel, admitted in congressional testimony this week that the Syrian government along with its Russian and Iranian allies have effectively won the war.

WNU Editor:  The Islamic State in eastern Syria has been destroyed .... so the original reason for the U.S. presence in the country has been fulfilled. So why are U.S. forces still there? Loyalty to the Kurds? Making sure that there is no direct Iran to the Israeli border road link? Positioning to play a post-war role in Syria? The White House appears to have no policy on what to do next.

The main reason for US intervention in Syria was the apparent use of chemical weapons by Assad outside the Syrian capital Damascus on August 21, 2013. The US has blamed the Syrian government forces for the deaths of hundreds of civilians in the attack, an accusation vehemently denied by Syria. A second chemical attack apparently took place on April 4, 2017, in Khan Sheikhoun, where 80 people died and hundreds suffered symptoms consistent with being exposed to nerve gas. In retaliation, US President Trump ordered an attack on a Syrian airfield where military sources suspected that the nerve gas had been launched.

If one continually abandons allies lightly, then one will have no allies in the future at some point.

I disagree about lack of policy. The policy is clear with ISIS. As long as Syria is disintegrated ISIS will reconstitute so USA stays in eastern Syria. Where is messy and opaque is dealing with the endless permutations of alliances and their goals with all the other stake holders in Syria. That’s like solving n equations with n squared unknowns.

I like that Anon.

The ole "oh me, oh my this is man impossible task" routine.

Do you have a little tap dance to go with it?

Groups change names to confuse wester leaders, press and people and have been doing it since the 1980s in Lebanon. You are only too happy to play along.

I do not see the Kurds changing their names or going through endless permutations.

Try another tack Anon. This one is not working.

Obama ignored the red line he had set. Trump did the same. Obama, aka Obumba, via Mr Snarky, was one of our great presidents. Trump, in office now one year: China expanding in China Sea; est places in South America and in Africa; Russia fiddling with our elections and nothing to conteract this or to protect for future cyber attacks and refusal to do anything about real sanctions (the oligarchs). What has he done? undoing Obama Care with no substitute. Passed huge tax cut for the wealthy and creating a huge deficit. But calling him names is a child's substitute for facts. Oh, forgot. Moving the embassy to Jerusalem, to the "delight" of all our Arab allies

Obama was our worst president.

Fred, maybe you can see the picture of Rousseff and Xi together. Rousseff has not been president since 2016. That was in Obama's time if you do not remember.

Stay there and give some place for Syrians to get some peace and quiet from non-stop war.

USA are too full of themselves to be loyal to anyone.

Is to block the route Iran-Iraq-Syria-Lebannon. To block reconstruction of Syria, and let that country as a tax on Assad and Russia. To block influence of Iran on Iraq. No matter the cost.

Until warmongering USA are ready to attack Iran directly. Their last hope.

Hey, Snarky...are you willing to end the nuke treaty? if so, say so. And when Iran gets nukes, so too, Saudis and then Turkey
You may think Obama the worst president but professionals, ie, presidential historians think otherwise...but of course you know better. You love to cite things. Cite evidence that Trump outstanding and Obama terrible president

So I find articles that refuted you last posts proving you are lazy, dishonest or not too bright.

People are monkeys and monkeys follow are the usual rules. In the current political atmosphere it would be professional suicide to diss Obama legitimately for poor policies.

That will change in time. Eventually reality bites the Left in the butt.

Here is an example of Obama poor policies. He had is wave of children illegals in the summer of 2014. What did we get? MS13 killings in the headlines often now.
