Asia Times: Chinese official raises specter of ‘financial war’ with the United States

Economist Mei Xinyu says the escalating trade dispute between Washington and Beijing could have consequences "beyond our imagination"

As the trade row between the United States and China heats up, a previously dovish senior Chinese government economist has taken the gloves off, quoting Mao Zedong in an interview with SpiegelOnline: “You lead your war, and I lead mine.”

Mei Xinyu, a member of the Ministry of Commerce’s Chinese Academy of World Trade and Economic Cooperation, warned that the two economic giants may be on the brink of a “financial war” with a potential outcome that is “beyond our imagination.”

He told the German website that the dispute over tariffs with the US, which he provocatively dismissed as a country that is going “downhill” and has “lost its fighting spirit,” has undeniably escalated into a full-blown trade war.

“We’ve been in a trade war for about two months. US President Donald Trump has imposed punitive tariffs on Chinese imports worth $ 50 billion and threatens to expand by $ 200 billion. If this is not a trade war, what else?”

WNU Editor: China has been waging a trade and financial war against the U.S. for a very long time .... not two months as the above Chinese official claims. The difference now is that the U.S. is standing up for itself, and the trade and financial models that countries like China have built their success stories on are now being threatened.

I can't believe the attitude of some governments. Too much is not enough. Why shouldn't you have a never ending trade deficit with us they shout.
Is the internet to blame for these immature attitudes? When we had to wait for the tubes to warm up to watch the tube we didn't have to endure such behavior from adults as we do today. The language is appalling. The concept of discretion doesn't exist.

Who Chinese they think they are? Of course a financial war will be hard, but they are obviously very narrow minded. This financial war will be with America AND with Europe. This because USA have a huge leverage on Europe. I don't think China will win against all the West.

Ps am in Vietnam visiting a friend right now and I've been talking about China with him and his family. They too want china to be slapped and slapped hard by the US because China "influences" their politics in the north a lot (bribing and harassing politicians...trying to change official language to Chinese by putting up Chinese speaking street signs etc and sending more Chinese to the north to "influence" shop keepers and only speak Chinese ...some have been abducted after complaining! !)..plus china apparently threatened them with war some time ago. .someone else pointed that out here a few times but I didn't believe it but they confirmed it(!) had to do with an oil platform that the Chinese disagreed in international waters the Chinese claim for themselves. ..threatened the Vietnamese with war over it!
