Co-founder of Google DeepMind and CEO of SpaceX among the 2,400 signatories of pledge to block lethal autonomous weapons

Thousands of scientists who specialise in artificial intelligence (AI) have declared that they will not participate in the development or manufacture of robots that can identify and attack people without human oversight.

Demis Hassabis at Google DeepMind and Elon Musk at the US rocket company SpaceX are among more than 2,400 signatories to the pledge which intends to deter military firms and nations from building lethal autonomous weapon systems, also known as Laws.

Hans,

I would add the Russians to this as well. The United States is WAY behind the major world powers in military technology yet our idiot leaders wish to poke fingers in the eyes of the Russians in particular.

Along comes Donald Trump who says (paraphrase) "Russia is a very powerful country. Maybe, just maybe we should try and get along with them." The pundit and political classes are complete idiots.

"Stable and focused" people and countries seek to have constructive relations with the movers and shakers in an organization that they need to interact with. The mentally unbalanced not so much.

Google should know all about evil, it is in their corporate DNA. I wouldn't want them designing killer AI either. Of course even if they don't, the Chinese will and many other countries. These people signing the pledge are foolish and shouldn't be listened too outside their narrow expertise.

"....shouldn't be listened to outside of their narrow expertise." This describes allot of people. Unfortunately many who are smart in one area think they are smart in areas they know nothing about. Even more unfortunate is that some people actually pay attention to them.

LOL!! I have a Patent in AI and this is crap. No way can anyone control this.

These pledgers are simply naïve and silly. Why do they bother? Who believes them? The young and hopeful? They will learn in time about empty gestures.
What's bothersome is that I don't believe these pledgers believe themselves. They are like lemmings with more intelligence. Falsely smiling posers at the tooth fairy convention.

This just means that Russia China Iran north Korea and a couple others will rule the world militarily. If those AI researchers in our countries don't understand this basic fact, we might as well just hand over the keys now. In North Korea the nuclear researchers will be executed/brutally tortured (or both) if they don't make progress. North Korea is already quite good at cyber. They can easily create narrow AI because much of the research is public..ffs even the libraries and frameworks are available for everyone to download. Even much of the training data for all kinds of scenarios is available. These stupid AI researchers. .mostly the kale eating bunch at Google. :)) I really like Google but man this hippie nonsense has to stop or we will lose future wars every damn time.
