I was stationed aboard Eisenhower 1987-1988. ABF; purple shirt - Fuels. Gas pumper.
Whenever airplanes come in for trap on a carrier, the pilot immediately pushes full throttle the second the plane touches the carrier deck. So if he misses all the arresting cables, he has a chance to pull a desperate recovery exhibited in the above video. Hence the angled deck of US aircraft carriers.
