SFGate/Washington Post: US military advantage has eroded, study says

WASHINGTON - The United States has lost its military edge to a dangerous degree and could potentially lose a war against China or Russia, according to a report released Wednesday by a bipartisan commission that Congress created to evaluate the Trump administration's defense strategy.

The National Defense Strategy Commission, comprised of former top Republican and Democratic officials selected by Congress, evaluated the Trump administration's 2018 National Defense Strategy, which ordered a vast reshaping of the U.S. military to compete with Beijing and Moscow in an era of renewed great-power competition.

WNU Editor: The report is raising some important issues .... Providing for the Common Defense. but with Democrats now in control of the purse strings, I doubt that the money will be there to address what the The National Defense Strategy Commission is concerned about.

Yeah, so let me get this straight.. the Democrats who for 2 years call Trump a tyrant, hitler and russia enabler, now will do another sequester to gut the military? Can't wait for Michelle Obama to run and once again utter a "pivot to Asia".. that will be soooo helpful. Go, girl! Maybe you can be proud of america once more in your life -- you know like the one time that country did something for you and you felt proud for being recognized? Not pathetic at all. JFK would salute your patriotism.

They want to pick fights with Russia and China all while cutting the military. Such behavior would appear to me to be the very definition of insanity.

The so called US military advantage that talking head pundits and government personnel refer to was/is largely mythical to begin with. With that said it is refreshing to see some people are finally starting to catch on.

The missions actually need to be adjusted towards a policy that advances American national security and economic interests. When properly done, we should not have to spend as much on the military.

Poll: Trump has little support for reelection bid

Right; he'll win in a landslide. The last election just proved that. No big swings in the State as Congress and Senate held on better than last few presidents. Facts count!

Have to disagree with WNU and the posters. If you guys think that Dems and lack of money are the issues you are missing the point. The MIC has adequate resources to meet current priorities it just grossly mismanages what it is given. That isn't a function of GOP or Dem control of the purse strings, I mean we're talking about a National Security state that is funded at close to $900 billion dollars a year and still chooses to find senseless brush wars in Asia.

If the Admirals, Generals, and strategists that wrote the NDS believe that fight WW3 off the shores China, essentially an away game almost 5000 miles the west coast, and not fully mobilize the country and start conscription, then they are insane. Any major war with China over there would see massive casualties and billions of dollars of kit wiped out of the order of battle in a matter of days.

Losing our military edge makes sense in a way. And just throwing money at the problem can't fix it. In what possible scenario would a country like Russia or China tolerate an overwhelming imbalance of forces that would lead to defeat on their own turf?

The Red Army won WW2 and took the brunt of the destruction. I can't foresee a scenario in which American society will accept fundamental structural changes and take hundreds of thousands of killed and wounded. Only a nuke strike on an American city, perhaps. But that would be insane.
