President Trump Doubles-Down On Criticisms Of French President Macron's Call For An EU Army To Protect Europe From The U.S. And Other Countries

FOX News: Trump slams Macron for low approval ratings, French surrender to the Nazis

President Trump on Tuesday ripped into French President Emmanuel Macron in a series of tweets -- hitting him on everything from his low approval ratings, to the French surrender to the Nazis in World War II, and suggesting U.S. wine is on par with French product.

Trump was tweeting after a visit to France over the weekend, where he marked the anniversary of the end of World War I. But the trip was marred after Macron said last week that Europe should build its own army, telling French radio: “We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the United States of America.”

Western Europe saved and protected by the USA since 1944 hates Trump and doesn't really like Americans. Eastern Europe conquered by the Soviet Union admires Trump and wants a close embrace with the USA. So that's the inner EU split. Nations like Greece, the Seven Seas states all will not like one bit watching Merkel and Macron play these games.

Sad to say, but out of all the NATO members there are a handful really vital to US interests, led by Norway, Britain, Denmark, Greece and Iceland. They are far and away the most important. I imagine they feel that US is their most important ally as well.

I agree with the above commenter @1:53
I'm actually from Europe, and am, as a western European, ashamed that we hold our nose (Macron, Merckel) just because Trump doesn't fit in the club. It's like all previous leaders were in this real old school country club and all of them had issues (but in the club you don't talk about money laundering, or debt issues, it's a country club ffs, you go there to drink and pretend). So Trump, who actually has money and achieved quite a bit in life, comes in and gets a lot of stuff done, despite 94% negative left-aligned media coverage, and they cannot stand it. Macron's "nationalism is betrayal of patriotism", that is a nice spin, but the reality (and that's where a business man like Trump comes in) is that the West is under siege and resources are limited. The US is currently handling Russia, China, Iran and North Korea all at the same time. Why? Because all these problems (IP theft of China, land grab of China and Russia, terrorism straight out of Iran, and even Obama told him that "North Korea will be his biggest problem and keeps him up at night".. like ffs how much longer would these politicians have kicked up the can? Finally we get a leader, (well, US leader - but by his frequent use of the first amendment - like it or not - he becomes a treasure trove and incubation against this left-wing nutjob political correctness world in which you get harassed and fired for not kissing everyone's protected sexes and races asses ALL THE TIME. can we normal people just speak without being told what we are and are not allowed to say? Thank you. Go Trump! And I hope my country pays up/contributes properly.. it's so embarassing

Anon (3:00PM),

I thought all western Europeans hate us. If what you say is true, then this may not be so and as for eastern Europeans I think they are gleefully using us as pawns in their power struggle against Russia. Hopefully I am wrong about that one.

B. Poster, of course Poland and the Baltics want to use the USA as a shield against Russia, wouldn't you if you led one of those nations? The question for the USA, what's in it for the USA?

As for the deterioration in relations between the USA and some key EU nations, its been ongoing for many years, at least since 2003 when Putin's Chancellor Schroeder fought tooth an nail against Bush's presidency. These calls for more independent EU from America were made when Obama was President. All Trump is doing is stating the obvious.

The EU is a trading club with rules designed to keep US imports out and US defense spending in. Trump is the first American President to say it out load over and over again. He has said that the same states in both NATO and the EU can't claim that bilateral trade issues are independent of America's commitment to NATO. Trump disagrees and says NATO members who erect trade barriers in the EU against US products can't expect American defense dollars.

Anyone object to that?

Anon (4:44PM),

Thank you for the reply. I am in pretty much in agreement with what you posted. There is probably very little I can add except perhaps the following. 1.)I suspect the deterioration in relations goes back much further than 2003. I suspect this goes back to at least the early 1990s and perhaps even longer than this. 2.)Your first paragraph pretty much nails this. I've been trying to make this point here and elsewhere for quite awhile. It is a very legitimate question to ask what is in this for us. In other words why are these countries worth risking a war with Russia, a war against arguably the world's most powerful military force, and a war we may not be able to win. Even if we do "win" what do we actually get other than millions of dead Americans and trillions of dollars in property damage. Of course these countries would be happy to use America as a "shield" against Russia in their power struggle with Russia. Perhaps I would too but I'd like to think I would have the decency to treat the people I am using with respect and explain to them why we are so important to expect them to take this risk. Essentially flattery does NOT cut it. I suspect we are being manipulated. POTUS has an eastern European spouse. As such, he may be especially susceptible to such manipulation. 3.)For sometime I have likened our relations with western Europe to a bad marriage with western European leaders being the abusive spouse. At this point, they no longer even bother with flattery in public. They treat us with contempt and expect us to keep being their b!tch boy. I'm concerned it is not much different with eastern Europe. At this stage, they still seem to be using the flattery approach to an extent. I would suggest our leaders should be very cautious and should be careful about trusting them. What's in it for us? As with any business transaction and even more so with one as risky as this that is a very good question. Conflict with Russia while perhaps necessary is not something to take lightly.

As for the rest, "anyone object to that?" I agree and think this has a great to do with why Trump was elected and still has much support among Americans.
