Business Insider/Reuters: Ukraine's military chief says Russia now poses the greatest military threat since 2014

* Russia has been ramping up its forces near the border with Ukraine since August and now poses the greatest military threat since 2014, says the commander of Ukraine's armed forces.
* General Viktor Muzhenko says the presence of Russian T-62 M tanks stationed 11 miles from the Ukrainian border had more than doubled to 250 from 93 machines within the space of two weeks.
* For Muzhenko this is evidence of a concerted build-up of Russian forces in the run-up to Nov. 25, when Russia fired on and captured three Ukrainian vessels at the Kerch Strait.
* Kiev's leadership fears this may be a precursor to a full-scale invasion.

KIEV (Reuters) — Russia has been ramping up its forces near the border with Ukraine since August and now poses the greatest military threat since 2014, the year Moscow annexed Crimea, the commander of Ukraine's armed forces told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

General Viktor Muzhenko gestured to a series of satellite images which he said showed the presence of Russian T-62 M tanks stationed 18 km (11 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

They had more than doubled to 250 from 93 machines within the space of two weeks from mid September to Oct 1.

IIRC three years ago I was sure as I could be that Russia was going to invade Ukraine. It was during one of those large live fire "exercises". I've forgotten that specific set of political dominoes, but it seemed to me that that exercise was going to change compass heading and become an invasion. It didn't.

That was before shipments of Javelin anti-tank missiles starting arriving in Ukraine. The US will not intervene directly on behalf of Ukraine. But we will smile at the irony at Russia fighting another Winter War.
