VOA: Russia, US: No Progress in Talks Over 1987 Nuclear Arms Treaty

Russia and the United States said Tuesday there was no progress in talks over Washington's intention to withdraw from a 1987 nuclear arms treaty because it says Moscow is violating its terms.

"On the whole, we are forced to state that there is no progress. The U.S. position is frozen in its uncompromising and peremptory demands," state news agency Tass quoted Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying after talks with U.S. Under Secretary of State Andrea Thompson in Geneva.

The U.S. side described the meeting as "disappointing."

Why would Russia compromise? They hold all the cards. They have broken out and they know Europeans won't stand for a nuclear arms race on their soil. Germany has confirmed it won't tolerate a US counterpart to the Russian breach. So for Russia, its a win to just say no.

Russia is on a roll with Germany and France saying they will stand up an EU army, a project applauded recently by Putin. He knows those two will rob NATO to do it. So NATO is weakened and he also knows its just a matter of time before the US walks away. Now with Russian nukes just minutes away with no land based counter, even more reasons for the US not to station assets in Europe.
