Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan arrived in Afghanistan on an unannounced visit today as the US pushes for peace talks with the Taliban.

The Pentagon chief will meet President Ashraf Ghani who has warned against rushing into a deal with the group after Washington held major talks in Qatar last month.

Negotiators hope the talks with Taliban officials could herald a breakthrough in the grinding 17-year conflict.

President Trump is pushing to end US involvement in Afghanistan, where 14,000 American troops are still deployed.
