Middle East Monitor: French colonel slams US tactics against Daesh in Syria

A senior French officer faces punishment after publicly condemning the US-led coalition’s military tactics against Daesh in the east of Syria, accusing Washington of prolonging the conflict and disregarding a growing civilian death toll, the army said on Saturday.

Colonel Francois-Regis Legrier – who has been in charge of directing French artillery supporting Kurdish-led groups in Syria since October – said the coalition’s focus had been on limiting its own risks and this had greatly increased the death toll among civilians, as well as raised the level of destruction.

WNU Editor: The French colonel probably has a point, but he is underestimating the lack of political and public will in the U.S. for any American casualties in Syria. A ground offensive over the use of artillery and fighter bombers may have ended the conflict quickly, but the casualties would have been high.

No, he misses the geopolitical point. The Syrian army would be more than happy to execute the kind of campaign he describes but the US is preventing that from happening for stupid geopolitical reasons and is therefore doing the militarily incompetent thing instead.

WNU, not to mention the risk of propaganda victories when ISIS beheads and mutilates captured american soldiers, if such an offensive would happen.

There is no political will.

You get too many civilian casualties (unless they are German) and the Left goes nuts. A liberal will always tell you what is too much, but will never set a standard and live by it or publish it ahead of time.

You have some jackanape like Bob say the civilian casualties were "x and x casualties is way too high ... war crimes; I love the American people but ...". sure Bob is Canadian, but there are plenty of jackanapes like him in America like in Portland.

Yes Michael, war for the sake of war and the benefit of the WIC. In the 21st century, as in the last half century of the previous century the strategy is like a clip from 1984. War is good, victory is bad.

Kind of hard to some people to follow the clearly marked trail

Bin Laden had Muslim Brotherhood teachers. Bin Laden murdered 3,000 people in the US. The US went after Al Qaeda as a result. ISIS is an offshoot of Al Qaeda. ISIS are terrible people. One they had got done raping and murdering Yazidis, they would have started on other people just like th NAZIS did with the Poles. When they were done with the Poles they went after the French.

Clearly marked trail, but we have a crank, foreign agent or drooler named Bob trying to tell us how things 'really' are.
