Denmark Goes To The Polls Today To Elect A New Government

Daily Mail: Denmark goes to the polls as centre-left Social Democrats are expected to win after adopting right-wing parties' tough stance on immigration

* Social Democrats under Mette Frederiksen are expected to win today's election
* The centre-left party supports restrictive immigration, but a strong welfare state
* Tough policies on immigration have been adopted by almost all Danish parties
* As a result the far-right Danish People's Party has lost its appeal with voters

Denmark goes to the polls in a general election today, with the centre-left Social Democrats predicted to win after adopting the right wing's long-standing tough stance on immigration.

Opinion polls put the party, led by Mette Frederiksen, at 27.2 per cent, a comfortable lead of almost 10 percentage points ahead of Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen's ruling Liberal Party, which has been in power for 14 of the last 18 years.

The polls also indicate that the far-right Danish People's Party, which has informally supported Rasmussen's minority government, could lose almost half its support, shrinking to 10.7 per cent.

After they lost the 2015 election to Rasmussen and his allies in the far-right anti-immigration Danish People’s Party, the Social Democrats continued to position themselves as guarantors of Denmark’s extensive welfare state, advocating high taxes and high state spending on public services.

At the same time, the party moved sharply toward the DPP on immigration policy, signing off on several government initiatives to tighten border controls.

Mette Frederiksen won!, not that IT matter so much but the danish peoples party is not far right as such - they maintain a hard stance om immigration, but is welfare oriented so they are a special combo. A Harder stance on immigration which is Common among almost All the parties as og recently which is probably why they lost so many mandater.. they lost theor appeal

Denmark’s nationalists had their worst drubbing ever in Wednesday’s election, resulting in a changed political landscape that will bring with it a new left-leaning government led by a 41-year-old woman.

Mette Frederiksen, who heads the Social Democrats, won the election after her political bloc promised more welfare paid for by higher taxes that will in part target the financial industry. Though she faces protracted government talks, Frederiksen is set to be Denmark’s youngest prime minister ever and only the second woman to lead the country’s government.
