Are U.S. Aircraft Carriers Easy To Sink?

National Interest: Iran Might Need a Nuclear Weapon to Sink an Aircraft Carrier

5 reasons killing these warships would not be easy in a war.

Key Point: The bottom line on aircraft carrier survivability is that only a handful of countries can credibly pose a threat to America's most valuable warships, and short of using nuclear weapons none of those is likely to sink one.

Large-deck, nuclear-powered aircraft carriers are the signature expression of American military power. No other combat system available to U.S. warfighters comes close to delivering so much offensive punch for months at a time without requiring land bases near the action. As a result, the ten carriers in the current fleet are in continuous demand from regional commanders -- so much so that extended overseas combat tours are becoming the norm.

Iran has hundreds of anti ship missiles with the range and precision to sink or badly damage a large ship. So does China, North Korea, Russia and many western nations. The USN is a reality based organization so it is working hard and spending billions to extend the attack ranges of its jets and escorts while staying outside these kill boxes.

A carrier group, even 600 miles from the strait, is a serious threat to Iranian forces. A carrier group isn't mean to slug it out against the enemy like old battleships and cruisers did. Making it enter a narrow strike where it would be easily targeted by mines, drones, suicide boats, antiship missiles, torpedoes.. would be suicidal.

Why expose an aircraft carrier to more weapon systems when it can be just as effective 600 miles away?

It's not even a question of how likely a Russian or Chinese attack on a carrier would be to succeed. Once they push the button and the hypersonics are in flight there is no system capable of stopping them. So in the case of Rus/China, yes they're "easy" to sink (with massive costs and doubtless retribution).

For most other foes it is almost impossible to sink one unless they're being very badly mismanaged.

Exactly, not one of WNU best statements.

Even for China its near impossible, they're means of tracking it in real time is, severely limited. Even if they find it and Lauch at that position it will be miles away.
