Robert Farley, National Interest: U.S. Military Nightmare: Could America Fight Both Russia and China at the Same Time?

A terrible idea--but could it happen? Would America come out on top?

Key point: America is strong enough that no one would try it, but no world war would be worth the cost.

The United States discarded its oft-misunderstood “two war” doctrine, intended as a template for providing the means to fight two regional wars simultaneously, late last decade. Designed to deter North Korea from launching a war while the United States was involved in fighting against Iran or Iraq (or vice versa,) the idea helped give form to the Department of Defense’s procurement, logistical and basing strategies in the post–Cold War, when the United States no longer needed to face down the Soviet threat. Well define the situation; can we fend off an invasion by Russia into the EU along with an aggressive move against Taiwan by China at the same time; if our allies are involved = Yes! We don't need to defeat China's massive ground forces, just make sure they stay home.

As Feldhake says, it all depends on the place, time, and type of war. Short answer is the US could do it easily.
A more pertinent question for Chinese would be: Would physical force, diplomacy, or some mix of the two be the best way to their obvious goal?
As it stands China is in a very difficult situation.
