CDC Director Says Be Prepared For Coronavirus To Become Widespread In America

CNN: CDC director: Novel coronavirus 'is probably with us beyond this season, beyond this year'

As an outbreak of a novel coronavirus has swept through Hubei province, China, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been preparing for its worst case scenario -- a widespread outbreak of illnesses in the United States.

"Right now we're in an aggressive containment mode," CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield told CNN's Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta in an interview on Thursday.

"We don't know a lot about this virus," he said. "This virus is probably with us beyond this season, beyond this year, and I think eventually the virus will find a foothold and we will get community-based transmission."

As of Thursday, there have been 15 cases of the novel coronavirus confirmed in seven states: eight in California; two in Illinois; and one in Arizona, Washington, Massachusetts, Wisconsin and Texas.

WNU Editor: The CDC Director is basically admitting that the coronavirus will be widespread in the US. He is not alone. Other experts are now sounding the alarm that a pandemic is becoming a very real possibility .... Coronavirus 'could infect 60% of global population if unchecked' (The Guardian). On the flip side, other expert are saying that it is still too early to predict where this outbreak may eventually end .... Could the new coronavirus really kill 50 million people worldwide? Now google and see how much budget money was cut from CDC by Trump

Trump released his fiscal year 2020 federal budget proposal in March, recommending huge cuts across the federal government, including a 12 percent cut to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and a 10 percent cut for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

At CDC, a reduction of that magnitude equates to a $750 million spending cut over fiscal year 2019. APHA member John Auerbach, MBA, president and CEO of Trust for America’s Health, said the proposed CDC cuts not only threaten federal public health capacity, they would have a “devastating” impact on state and local public health departments, which depend heavily on CDC dollars flowing down to the community level.

You have no idea where the budget for the CDC went.

Last I saw the Air force got cut also.

Hyperinflation due to loss of reserve currency status due continual to a trade imbalances could start riots that could kill far more people.

You obviously do not understand economic science nor do you want to understand it.

"In the president’s proposed 2021 federal budget released Monday, the administration says that the changes to the CDC’s funding are intended to “re-focus CDC’s core mission on preventing and controlling infectious diseases and other emerging public health issues, such as opioids.”

The proposal reduces and consolidates CDC funding for programs under the “chronic disease prevention and health promotion” category. That includes programs addressing heart disease, cancer, diabetes, tobacco use, stroke, nutrition, physical activity, and arthritis."

Without the PSA liberals will get up to all sorts of mischief and blame it on others.

But I see your point. If the government does not tell you to get up and move, no one else will. Hence the need for government funded PSAs. After all it is rocket science and you not being a scientist except in feminist theory, well your behind the 8 ball.

NC Democrat says Trump is cutting the CDC budget by 80 percent

In his first year as president, Donald Trump made it clear that he wants to cut some government programs.

He signed an executive order instructing budget writers to root out waste in the federal government. And his proposed budget included cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as education programs.

Trump’s moves have sparked outcry among Democrats, who have argued that the cuts will make government less effective and endanger the environment. In North Carolina, state Rep. Bobbie Richardson recently took to Twitter to raise alarm about Trump’s latest budget proposal and how it affects the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Richardson, a three-term representative from Louisburg, is the Democratic whip in the state House.

"The president is cutting the CDC budget by 80%. Is this recklessness or deliberate action against preventive healthcare?" Richardson tweeted on Feb. 3. She has about 1,000 followers.

PolitiFact found this tweet questionable. The CDC is the nation’s primary source for developing and applying disease prevention methods and health education activities. Cutting the CDC budget by 80 percent would have a drastic impact on its ability to study America’s ability to help prevent illness across the country.

What the CDC said

Finding the truth seemed as simple as asking CDC officials about their budget. So we reached out to them. Bernadette Burden, a senior press officer for the CDC, responded Wednesday.

She said the CDC’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2019, which starts in July, is $5.66 billion. That’s a decrease of approximately $1.4 billion – or 20 percent – compared to the spending level, Burden said in an email.

Still arguing budget size and not results.

The more we spend the more we get for our money $$$$$ !

Health education: Wow like people cannot get that anywhere else?

My Grandma never told me Not to over eat until she saw a PSA on TV.

Unlike in Europe you cannot buy the magazine "Men's Health" in stores in the US.

There are no not-for-profits and no universities in the US doing cancer research.

Anon 3:01 (aka Ms Excitable) Please review your post. Is the CDC being cut by 20% or 80%?

The Trump administration pulled funding in its 2021 budget for Stars and Stripes, the U.S. military news organization that has published a daily newspaper continuously since World War II for troops stationed around the world.

At a Thursday press conference in Belgium, Defense Secretary Mark Esper explained the rationale behind the decision to withhold approximately $15.5 million in funding for Stars and Stripes.

no real reason give; just the usual bullshit to feed this time to our military!

There is the Military Times and other periodicals. Do we need the Stars and Stripes? If Stars and Stripes did not exist today would there be an underlying, important need to to create it as of today?

My unit had its own periodical. Any battalion or higher echelon does. How many military themed/interest periodicals are soldiers suppose to read? Should they be reading their unit periodical, their parent unit periodical, WNU, and many other periodicals and blow off maintenance, training and other duties?

Parrot, if that is you, do you ever think?
