Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, a former health policy adviser in the Obama administration, said late Wednesday that he found President Trump's remarks during a news conference on his administration's response to the coronavirus outbreak a "little incoherent."

Speaking on MSNBC's "Hardball," Emanuel, now a special adviser to the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), said that Trump's comments indicated how little the president knew about public health.

He also stressed that health officials still do not know vital information about the virus, which first appeared in China and has since infected more than 80,000 people in more than three dozen countries. The U.S. has reported 60 confirmed cases of the virus.

Pence is now in charge of the response to the coronavirus outbreak. That event alone is cause enough for all Americans to fall on their knees and pray for God's help.

A California coronavirus patient had to wait days to be tested because of restrictive federal criteria, despite doctors’ requests. The patient, who has tested positive, may be the first person to be infected through community spread in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.

C.D.C. officials said it was possible the patient was exposed to a returning traveler who was infected. At the moment, however, the new case appears to be one in which the source of infection is unknown, suggesting that the virus may be transmitted within the community.

Following mounting bipartisan criticism that the administration’s response to the spread of the coronavirus had been sluggish, President Trump on Wednesday named Vice President Mike Pence to coordinate the government’s response, even as he repeatedly played down the danger to the United States of a widespread domestic outbreak.

You don't need to worry about the global pandemic that's spreading rapidly, killing all those people, and creating economic turmoil, according to someone who knows nothing about it.

"The Coronavirus is very much under control in the U.S.A.," President Trump tweeted on Monday. "We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!" This was on the same day that U.S. stock markets plunged more than 3.5 percent amid concerns that the coronavirus was very much not under control.

The following day, the Centers for Disease Control warned that the coronavirus was headed to the United States, and the Dow Jones dropped more than 800 points. Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the CDC's head of respiratory diseases, said, "Disruption to everyday life might be severe."

Lesson: When Trump tells you not to worry, you should worry.

Not only does the president get things wrong, but his priorities are skewed. He doesn't worry about things he cannot understand, and he doesn't want us to worry about them either. This is a lot of things.

Trump wants people to be afraid when they shouldn't be afraid and wants people to be unconcerned when they should be concerned. The rapidly spreading global pandemic is under control. The plunging stock market is nothing to worry about. North Korea is now a pacifist hippie commune. Americans with pre-existing conditions won't lose their health coverage, notwithstanding the Trump administration's attempts to deprive them of it.

Praying for God's help is a good idea anytime. I pray our leaders have wisdom to properly address this situation.

I still think this is a situation where calm and rational responses are the best approaches to deal with this situation. The hysterical panicked over the top responses we are seeing from the media and certain leaders not only won't solve the problem but will make things worse. Already the panicked poorly thought out responses of some in leadership have already caused more harm than the disease itself has and likely more harm than the disease ever will.

In addition to prayers for wisdom to handle things like this that I offer daily to God for all of our leaders, I think prayers of Thanksgiving to God are also important. At this time I'm thankful to God for sending us people like Donald Trump and Mike Pence for there are none in the world who are better suited than they are to properly address this.

How do you mean? This is simply my assessment based upon an analysis of the people involved and based upon personal experience.

Keeping calm in a situation is going to be a better approach than hysterical panic. Hysterical panic is what we are witnessing from many in leadership. At least this is my take right now but I wouldn't necessarily rule out nefarious intentions on the part of some.

The hysterical panicked responses of some are a bit like how reports of fires have shown people reacting. People panic and all rush for the exit blocking the exits and everyone perishes!! Had they remained calm and exited in an orderly fashion either no one died or the loss of life is greatly minimized.

So I will reiterate the calm level-headed responses of Trump and Pence are the right ones that are most likely to yield the results we want and I think God for men like these in positions of power. IMHO Trump made a mistake by not getting out in front with the proper messaging on this about three weeks ago. This has allowed false and destructive narratives to take root.

On prayers to God my comment was somewhat sarcastic.

If you are American, believe in God you had better start praying that Pence will do a better job than he has in the past regarding potential pandemics. As for Trump, money needed for healthcare to deal with the coming pandemic went to the wall with more to go down that pissing hole.

People pray to God to heal illness and to send leaders who will fix all the troubles while other people pray to God to send leaders that will bring illness and troubles to those others. Now to whom is God going to deliver?

God as history has shown really doesn't care one way or the other. Religion, irrespective of what people believe only survives because of the carrot and stick routine and on any given day you can get the carrot, or, get the stick, sometimes even both.

As for Trump he is answering the prayers from those who want to do harm to the people of America. If you cannot see that you might pray for better comprehension of what is going down, or read a bit more.

B.Poster said...

Perhaps it is you who needs to read more. It helps to take the time and effort to "find out" about things rather than kindly accepting certain narratives without questioning them. Bottom line: Trump can be removed from office IF enough Americans can be convinced to vote against their interests.

As for how situations were handled in the past, I'd need to study them. Each one is different. In the current one, the Trump/Pence approach is the proper one.

The current situation is not a pandemic nor is it likely to become one. It is helpful to compare COVID-19 vs the flu. Over the top hysteria as is being demonstrated by some in leadership is not warranted but it is an eternal opener. If these people can't handle the current situation without losing their minds, handling a real crisis will be problematic at best. It seems clear there needs to be major changes in the leadership at CDC among other agencies.

As for money going to the wall, the lack of proper border security along the southern border is a much bigger issue than COVID-19 and absolutely should get more resources. Leadership is elected to make decisions on how to allocate resources. In focusing on the wall, Trump has acted properly, however, I don't think he has focused on it as much as he should.

COVID-19 is looking more like an over reaction to me than something that should be as all consuming as it has become. As such, it would be a misallocation of resources to divert resources away from much needed border security to this.

You have you head in the sand.

B.Poster said...

Just a blanket "you have your head in the sand." No specifics? Oh well, just as well anyway. I'm extremely busy.

Bob Huntley said...

It means you are not prepared to listen, to see, or to learn. Doesn't need specifics as from your comment you are ignoring the obvious relative to DJT and the impact he is having on America and Americans.

B.Poster said...

Actually Bob, it is you who seem obviously unprepared to listen or learn preferring to stick to talking points.

Now I will further elaborate on my points above. The tax cuts and regulatory reforms implemented under Trump have drastically improved the lives of small to mid sized businesses owners, managers, and employees of such companies as well as entrepreneurs. Of course the Houston area I live in has a large percentage of this type of person. Such people tend to thrive when onerous tax and regulatory burdens on them are reduced and they have. Maybe welfare recipients who refuse to enter the workforce haven't done as well. The policies under President Trump have drastically improved the lives of many including my loved ones. As the only new variable, I think he deserves the lions share of the credit. Perhaps Democrats hope to use a well coordinated psy-oos campaign to get Americans to vote against their interests.

So far in a country of 331M people 60 cases of COVID-19 this has all the makings of an over reaction. While I'm not ready to conclude nefarious intent here, I am beginning to think this may be a deliberate attempt to foment a mass panic. In any event, it's a wakeup call. Certain leaders can't even keep their composure when there isn't a crisis. This doesn't inspire confidence that they will be able to handle a real crisis. It seems we may need massive changes at the top of CDC and other agencies.

It's going to be important not to divert resources from vital border security to chase after much more relatively minor threats. The illegal immigrant invading force brings crime, place undue strains on an already over burdened safety bet system, and disease. This threat is far more severe than COVID-19 likeky ever could be.

Border security is an important part of disease prevention especially when the invaders are coming from countries who lack proper health care and hygiene. It's looking more and more like the travel restrictions placed on China were a good idea after all. So far that has helped keep this situation under control in the US, I think a credit to Trump's leadership.
