Africa’s Coronavirus Pandemic Has Hit ‘Full Speed’

Daily Mail: Africa’s coronavirus pandemic has hit ‘full speed’, the continent’s Center for Disease Control chief warns

* Africa has surpassed 500,000 coronavirus cases with more than 12,000 deaths
* South Africa has the most confirmed cases on the continent with over 224,000
* Clinical trials for a Covid-19 vaccine have begun in South Africa and Egypt
* For a continent of more than 1.3 billion, more needs to be done the CDC has said

The COVID-19 pandemic in Africa is reaching 'full speed,' the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention chief said on Thursday, as the total number of cases rose over 500,000 on Wednesday.

Just a day after confirmed coronavirus cases across Africa surpassed the half-million milestone the total was over 522,000 and climbing, with more than 12,000 deaths. With testing levels low, the real numbers are unknown.

South Africa has the most confirmed cases with over 224,000, and for the first time Gauteng province - home to Johannesburg and the capital, Pretoria - has the country's most cases with over 75,000, or 33%.

WNU Editor: Testing for the coronavirus is very limited in Africa.  I suspect the true numbers are many magnitudes bigger.

How much a country tests will definitely affect the number of cases. As the US tests more than other countries and makes extensive use of contract tracing that far exceeds other countries we are finding people who are infected that otherwise wouldn't have gotten tested.

"* South Africa has the most confirmed cases on the continent with over 224,000"

So?
South Africa is also an AIDS capital. That would be what they call a pre-existing condition.

How does AIDS medication affects a person's ability to cope with COVID?

If a person has HIV and no medication, well they can kiss their ass goodbye.

HIV and AIDS in South Africa. South Africa has the biggest HIV epidemic in the world, with 7.7 million people living with HIV. HIV prevalence among the general population is high at 20.4%.

7.7 million people with HIV. Only 62% getting anti-retroviral drugs.

You do the math.

You know churches .... they are stupid. They preach abstinence.

Supposedly the average America and the average South African have 7 sexual partners during their lifetime. The only difference is that South Africans tend to have theirs almost all at once. Also, supposedly South Africans like coitus dry and rough.

Looks like South Africa may need some of the expertise in testing and contact tracing that America is utilizing. The working assumption on testing is that the asymptomatic and those with mild symptoms are the super spreaders of this thing. As such, the goal of pushing testing and contact tracing is to identify these people so we can quarantine them and stop the spread of the disease. Whether or not the working assumption is correct is debatable as the research is at best inconclusive and more likely than not in IMHO those with mild symptoms or who are asymptomatic are NOT spreading the disease to any measurable degree. Essentially leaders should not be making any policy decisions based solely upon numbers of new cases per day or percentage of tests positive. Unfortunately this is where US leadership is getting it completely wrong.
