SCMP: US, Vietnam and Philippines accuse Beijing of ‘unlawful maritime claims’ with five-day drill in South China Sea

* Exercises near the Paracel Islands break pledge not to militarise contested maritime region, says US Department of Defence
* Vietnam’s foreign ministry says ‘violation of sovereignty’ may harm China’s relationship with Asean

The United States, Vietnam and the Philippines have lashed out at China, accusing it of coercion as Beijing launches a military drill in a disputed part of the South China Sea.

In a statement, the US Department of Defence said it was concerned about the military exercises carried out around the Paracel Islands
from July 1 to 5.

China scheduled five days of drills from Wednesday near the Paracels. Vietnam has overlapping claims with China over the Paracels. China calls them the Xisha Islands, and Vietnam refers to them as the Hoang Sa Islands.

USS Gabrielle Giffords?

Did I miss an obit?

Don't they usually name ships after a person is gone?

Too much PC.

Tacky, very tacky.

While the Navy has attempted to be systematic in naming its ships, in recent years it seems there has been a complete breakdown in any attempt to sustain a systematic practice in the name categories for ship types. The first ship named for a living person was USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) in 1975. Other ships named for living people include:

USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51)
USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN 709)
USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76)
USNS Bob Hope (T-AKR 300)
USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23)
This lack of discipline in distinguishing between the quick and the dead has been utterly overwhelmed in recently years by the promiscuous distribution of names among various classes of ships.

Good to team up with Vietnam. They hate the Chinese. Despise them. They love the west and are great people

Yep. USN ship naming has been a quagmire of competing political "wokeness" for many years.

USS Donald Trump

Of course he'd never accept this while he's alive. Being the selfless person he is ge wouldn't want the attention associated with it. He understands it isn't about him unlike a large number of US leaders.

USS Barack Obama

This would ve politically safe. As the first African American president in US history he is revered and admired by almost Americans even those who don't agree with his policies.
