It's been one week since the devastating explosion in Beirut that killed at least 171 people, injured thousands and left many more homeless.

The disaster sparked days of protests against endemic corruption in Lebanon's political system — a persistent issue that critics say was a direct cause of the port explosion.

It has been reported that the country's leaders were warned last month about the presence of 2,750 tonnes of highly volatile ammonium nitrate in storage at the port, which had been warehoused there for six years.
