Reparations For U.S. Slavery Is Estimated To Come With A $12 Trillion Price Tag

CNBC: Support for a program to pay reparations to descendants of slaves is gaining momentum, but could come with a $12 trillion price tag

* A movement supporting reparations as a way to make amends for the atrocities of slavery and to reduce the persistent wealth gap is gaining momentum.
* One hundred and forty-two members of Congress support H.R. 40, the bill to study reparations.
* William Darity, professor of public policy at Duke University, estimates a concrete program could cost the U.S. government between $10 trillion and $12 trillion.

Reparations for slavery has been fiercely discussed in the United States since Union Army Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman promised 40 acres and a mule to 4 million freed slaves in 1865. While Americans don’t generally support a reparations program paid by taxpayers, this summer’s events have shifted the once overlooked topic into the national debate.

One hundred and forty-two members of Congress have co-sponsored H.R. 40, the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act, compared with only two in 2014. Even Joe Biden, the presumptive 2020 Democratic presidential nominee, has said he supports the study, representing a change on the issue.

William Darity, professor of public policy at Duke University, has studied the rationale and design of reparations for more than 30 years. He says, “the present moment seems to afford more of an opportunity to move forward than any moment I’ve experienced in my lifetime.”

WNU Editor: I do not see non-blacks in the U.S. supporting such a program. And as for the cost of the program .... $10 to $12 trillion?!?!?! The money is not there.

This was already attempted. It was called the War On Poverty. Wherein the US government ever so kindly replaced the Black American father with a government check. Thereby destroying the black nuclear family.

That cost us a generation of people and about $15 trillion in today's dollars.

I'll let Biden/Harris drag that particular boat anchor across the finish line.

I in no way feel responsible. One of my parents is an immigrant. My spouse is an immigrants. Immigrants do not feel responsible for what happened 150 years ago.

so that is why liberals came up wit the concepts of privilege, systemic racism and other bullshit.

I changed my stance due to the Democrat Party/BLM riots. I am now pro-choice.

This is extremely dangerous for the black community, even a deadly one. Sorry, but in case of this advent, what would happen is the killing of all the black community in the USA. The problem would be fixed. Sad, but true.

I'd like reparations for the tyranny that women and the BLM movement project onto innocent white men, who didn't have slaves, whose relatives didn't have slaves and are still attacked, completely ignoring any moral or legal aspects.

I've lost sleep, feel depressed. Where are my reparations from these tyrants that roam the streets now, who are directly involved in acts of violence and suppression. Not hundreds of years ago.

They riot now. They steal now. They murder now. They lie now. They scream at us now. The threaten us now. They don't listen now. They blame always us now. They hate America now. They hate white people now. They are true racists now. They're abandoning due process now. They silence you now. Attack you for your point of view now.

They do all of these things now. Pointing to a collective guilt committed by "white men" so they say. Ignoring history. Ignoring facts. Ignoring that many African nations had and to this day still have slaves. The mid east too. China. All had and still have slaves. Everyone participated.

But the only race and breed that died for their fellow black brothers, overwhelmingly, were white men. White men are the original slave freers and died for that cause. Overwhelmingly. Won the battles and wars. Now you paint all white men as toxic? And you call yourself informed or inclusive? Shame on you all! You're the ones who move the country back. Your intentions are good, I'm sure, but you're moronic in your execution and create actual resentment. You cause civil unrest. You cause pain. You cause poverty. All these shop owners who got attacked. Some killed. Injured. Looted. How many is enough? How many have to die for your self righteous perversion? Grow the fck up!

White men died for you to free you. White men raised women to their own level. You call it suppression. Sure. Blame everything on white men. Ignore what you do. The hatred. The lies.

And they actually are the ones doing it to me, to you and then on top want reparations for something neither I nor you have done?
Right.

Meanwhile China actually kills you, robs you and the generations to follow blind. The greatest wealth transfer in history of mankind and you attack white men.

The irony

One element of the government of this country is more and more becoming a farce. I find it more and more difficult to use positive words when thinking of it.
More emotion based legislative attempts.

Since legal definition of race by ancestry was thrown out by Supreme Court decision does that mean I could self-identify as being black and get money too? Not only is the concept insane from a fiscal perspective it’s practical management is impossible.

Is your skin colour white?
Then you're guilty. Of something. Doesn't matter if your entire ancestry line is innocent. Your skin is white. We want money from you. We want jobs from you. And we want you to shut up you entitled fck

If it wasn't for slavery, how many black Americans would there be? As bad as it was, with the US maintaining white immigration until the 1960s, most of the 30+ million black Americans would be living in West African nations with considerably lower standard of living than the US.

On the basic law we are responsible of what we are doing, not family or friend. African countries have to pay most of the bill because they sold their own.....!
