There's a lot of truth in what you say....Roger,
There's a lot of truth in what you say. My father's father was a founder of the bricklayer's local and my mother's father was a founder of the ironworker's local. My father was the first successful contractor to come out of the union that I know of in this area. I have been in and out the construction trade for over 50yrs, from residential to heavy commercial and industrial. My father was on both sides of the bargaining table at one time or the other in union negotiations and I have been an observer many times.
The Mexicanos really started coming in during the late 70's early 80's. As you say it was first drywall and painting. Then they pushed the blacks out of concrete. Now they are penetrating the plumbing, HVAC, and electrical trades. Some are good some aren't, not all that different than the whites. What happened was the public schools used to have a fair industrial arts programs that fed fairly qualified people into the trades for apprenticeships, but that ended in the 80's with the push for everyone to have liberal arts education. At the same time the unions took very unrealistic stances in the bargaining sessions and essentially priced themselves out of the labor market.
There was and still is a place for unions in America, but when they entered the political realm (which wasn't all that bad of a decision) they made some poor choices which have cost them to this day.
I can walk up to almost any building and tell you with in a year or two when it was built, not just from design characteristics, but the workmanship. But if I grouch about it, I'm just a "grumpy old man" who's saying we did it better in our day.
Any race can produce top tier workmanship, I've seen this with my own eyes, but it takes a culture that demands good workmanship, provides the training for it, and pays for it.
Anyway enjoyed your comments.Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13642228725661059539noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8519488391496270073.post-44436439077207637402016-11-13T15:29:16.890-05:002016-11-13T15:29:16.890-05:00Oil up the $$$ printing press.
I was in the ne...

Oil up the $$$ printing press.
I was in the new home industry during a prior bubble. In Socal where I worked, many of the trades, especially drywall, concrete, .....hmmm, just about all, now that I recall, were composed of English as a second language people and many were not legal. If one wanted to experience pandemonium all one had to do was yell "immigration" in Spanish. Instant chaos.
What I found ironic was when the bubble was collapsing the drywall workers went on strike to form a union. This was in 1992 in Adelanto CA, the last project on which I worked; building homes I could never afford to buy.

RogerRoger Smithnoreply@blogger.com
