Tonight Is Movie Night: Zulu (1964)

WNU Editor: Wikipedia has some good background information on this movie and on the battle.

  1. If I remember the scene correctly
Private: Why us, Colour Sergeant, why us?
Colour Sergeant: Because WE'RE here lad, and nobody else.
No feeling in the world like it.
Bit of trivia, at the end they take a roll call. They call out the name Jones with a different number after it many times, why?

  2. Keeping up with the
    Jones was because they
    were a Welsh unit and
    Jones was so common a
    surname in Wales that
    they had to distinguish
    each other with numbers.

    I love this movie. The
    characters are clearly
    defined, the story is
    crisp, and it doesn't
    deviate too far from
    what actually happened.

    More trivia. In real
    life, what infirmity did
    Bromhead have? Who do
    historians think really
    organized the defense
    of Rourke's Drift?

  3. I love this film. The bravery that these men displayed is truly astounding.

  4. Almost ofs. My understanding is that Welsh surnames were so hard to pronounce for the British that they arbitrarily gave them Jones and a number.

  5. James,

    That's a much better
    explanation.
