After Only One Year The Afghan Taliban Have Wiped Out Opium Production. This Raises Questions About What The U.S. And Its Opium Eradication Efforts Was Doing All Along

Data from Alcis shows that a majority of Afghan farmers switched from growing poppy to wheat in a single year

Mint Press: Taliban’s Massively Successful Opium Eradication Raises Questions About What US Was Doing All Along

The Taliban government in Afghanistan – the nation that until recently produced 90% of the world’s heroin – has drastically reduced opium cultivation across the country. Western sources estimate an up to 99% reduction in some provinces. This raises serious questions about the seriousness of U.S. drug eradication efforts in the country over the past 20 years. And, as global heroin supplies dry up, experts tell MintPress News that they fear this could spark the growing use of fentanyl – a drug dozens of times stronger than heroin that already kills more than 100,000 Americans yearly.

The Taliban Does What the US Did Not

It has already been called “the most successful counter-narcotics effort in human history.” Armed with little more than sticks, teams of counter-narcotics brigades travel the country, cutting down Afghanistan’s poppy fields.

In April of last year, the ruling Taliban government announced the prohibition of poppy farming, citing both their strong religious beliefs and the extremely harmful social costs that heroin and other opioids – derived from the sap of the poppy plant – have wrought across Afghanistan.

WNU Editor: How is it that the U.S., after spending years and billions to eradicate Afghanistan's opium production, completely failed .... but the Taliban, with no money and armed with little more than sticks, succeeded within a year.

I think the answer is obvious. Past Western-backed Afghan governments and the U.S. were not serious in eradicating Afghanistan's poppy fields

  1. there are sites out there that discuss this as well as a book or two by the military in charge of eradication.

  3. How do you think the CIA's Libya and Syria operations were paid for without telling Congress they needed money to send to al qaeda? Drugs, of course. That's how CIA and every other "intelligence agency" pays for the programs that they can't ask the public to pay for.

Gotta remember that, from 1976 up until Feb 2022, it was still taboo for the triple letters to openly fund political death squads thru congress.

Luckily for us the next best unregulated poppy capital of the world resides in Eastern Europe, mostly within the borders of the recently added Balkan NATO states.

  4. More often than not, doing a bit of research helps to understand things instead of simply tossing stuff online.

  5. US selling drugs to finance operations worldwide.

  6. The Taliban allowed or protected poppy growing when they were not in charge in Kabul. They were however in control of large parts of the country side. The Taliban took their cut.

The Taliban could profit off of drugs with no shame and no loss of face, because they were engaged in jihad. So it was permissible.

If the US was as draconian as the Taliban in stamping out drugs it would be considered a war crime and the blow back would be sever and immediate.

But WNU got to go the MSM route and smear the US, so it is all good in his view.

It is from the Brookings institute, which is liberal, but still it is worth reading.

  10. The US did not want the poppy eradicated, because the US elites were making too much money on heroin.

  12. Lol okay okay , now for real guys ,

Im not an expert, i have seen a youtube documentary or 2 , that said , i have a few things to say.

First of all great modern day journalism thats one.
Second “armed with nothing more then sticks” lol , the person who thinks you believe that thinks you are dumb , let that be clear.

One major difference of the taliban policy is it goes after addicts really really hard , they get chased down the streets by a team of 8 , semi miltary casual clothes and they are very much armed . You can see real fear in the people’s eyes. Take that as you will

What happens is they get loaded into a van and get transfered to a rehabilitation centre wich is basicly a prison , there is no capacity to house people and there is barely enough food , they stay there untill a doctor deems them rehabilitated.

In any western country this would be considered unlawfull conditions and we are not even talking about the whole “going after the addicts” chapter cus they have some sort of victim status in most anti drug policy , jail for posession or misorderly conduct but thats about it .

Now are the talibans metods succesfull ?
    Well they say so
Im not convinced untill i see the actual trade go down in numbers since 90% of information coming from there is taliban propaganda after all

Is it succesfull ? Time will tell ,it’ll be interesting to see the results.

Is there a western government who can lawfully operate under the same conditions and adopt the same METHODS ?

Hell no and the bozo writing this article knows if.

    ReplyDelete
  13. It's not that simple.

You see ,your operational survey team is out there with a provincial governor. You all are standing on a road in the middle of a huge poppy field. The road splits the fieldd in two.

And he points to one side and says,, yes, yess, destroy all the poppies over here. And the US guy says , but well we can do both sides.

The Provincial governor says. No oh no, not this side, these are not poppies. And we looked the other way.

    Now You get the idea.??

BTW Karzi's brother controlled most of the poppy trade in country.

That is what you get when you have a corrupt government for Allies. just like Viet nam....... and today....just like Ukraine.

    Non-stop trolling ... just nonstop

So you think about it and think about it and I got it

    "Fat man" and "little boy"

The troll or trolls are little boy.

You can think of the trolls as soldiers and the blogger as caporegime.

    ***********************************************

    [T]aliban[']s met[h]ods succes[s]full

Some of the proof was provided by satellite imagery, but you know trolls. Trolls got to troll.

    ***********************************************

    There's something else strange.

They're using sonar as if they're looking for something, but nobody's listening.

    What do you mean?-

    At their speed they could
run over my daughter's stereo and not hear it.

    They're not searching for Ramius.

    They're driving him.

    ***********************************************

These troll(s) are doing the sock puppet routine of responding to themselves and trying to persuade or build consensus.

America is in a 3 front war and these turkeys think that if the information apace campaign is good they will prevail. They just keep on piling on, which decide which front gets attention first.

What I would like to know is if Russia has a foundation. China and America each have one.

  15. you all have troll on the brain and it is transparent.

coffee cold in the cubicles this morning?

yes you lost in Afghanistan because of intentional incompetence, not because of trolls.

but you get paid to lie.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The US lost in Afghanistan because the US let Osama escape at the Battle of Tora Bora by insisting Afghans as a blocking force, Obama was stingy on the surge (he 1/2 assed it or worse), the US was loathe to admit it was fighting Pakistan and the US denies the nature of Islam.

No, I am talking about the trolling now. We do know that Russia paid the Biden Crime Syndicate over 3.5 million dollars. Russia will have to account for this crime.

I am not in a cubicle, but you wish that you org could afford cubicles.

    ReplyDelete
  17. About the cubicle thing. Maybe you should study psychology. Just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  18. ok you did not directly lie..maybe...

so you are saying you are not working for the us gov, in any capacity..

contract, employee, volunteer or a subsidiary of an entity that has a usg contract. or an ngo or think tank that supports usg operations of any sort.

  19. Thank you for confirming that you are a GS employee or one of thier fellow contractees. Thank you for making that clear.

I would not want to be one of you for all the money in the world.

  26. That is so lame as a story it is funny.

So I take it you are a high school student and school is out of session?

You are an adult delivering newspapers in the electronic age? I remember a national level business paper being delivered every morning before sunrise. Guy drove a 10 or 20 year old 6 banger. Working poor. Have not seen that guy in years maybe a decade.

"delivering newspapers in the electronic age"

I take that back. that is so lame, you should be fired. There must be a work camp somewhere in Siberia that needs you.

  27. The Afghans also have the ability and the will to beat the living sh*t out of anybody who doesn't comply.

  28. The Americans had the ability, but not the will. If they had done, anything the Lef-tit press would cry war crimes even as their children die form drug overdoses.

So, I do a honest days work and all you do is complain,. You suck. . Typical liberal progressive , arrogant, small minded and ideologically driven. You are a perfect match for government work. When not belittling the "deplorables" out there, you work to backstab your fellow colleges.

Getting near quitting time for you feds , so I will be surprised if you answer this.

Just remember , the guys From DoS and DoD that lost in Afganinstan were arrogant Jerks, just like you. And, yes I saw it happen then too.

  30. a good deal of nonsense based on simple dislike of this or that agency and a cynical view of one's own country.
We learned in trying to eradicate poppies that farmers could not make a living with nonnarcotic farming and would and did turn to the Taliban, who in fact would allow them to grow poppies.

Now, the Taliban, firmly entrenched and in charge with no war to fight, is using Sharia law to stop the growth of poppies. The US was there fighting a war and the poppy growth was not the number one priority.

It takes all day to deliver newspapers. If you are going to have a legend at least make it plausible. There are two reason you have not been rolled up. First, you are in Russia. Second, you are ineffective.

    We are winning in Afghanistan.

    pathetic parrot.

    ReplyDelete
  36. No, you sick Russian freak. As far back as 2017 I said here at this blogspot that they US should get out, because there was no intention of winning. We were fighting Pakistan. Or better put Pakistan was fighting the Us, but the US was not fighting back. Thus there was no way the US could win.

Thus it was a criminal waste of American lives, when the political class had no intention of winning.

Now Mr. Patriot join the Rosguardia. They are forming new formations as we speak.

  37. good ...at least now, common ground...

" Thus it was a criminal waste of American lives, when the political class had no intention of winning".

so the same idiots who ran the Afghan op are now running the Ukraine op. And you support them 100% right???
